I'm currently playing NS and enjoying the auction system.

It's quite addictive if you like collecting cards.

I also played it for a while and quickly realized that fighting against whales is pointless, and there's not much fun in it.

You can farm cards reasonably well with twinks (and sell them, transferring currency to your main account, and then buy what you need with your main). Or join a large region like The North Pacific (specifically with "the"), join a card guild there, and they'll explain everything further (respect to the people whose enthusiasm keeps this going). All these attempts to buy cheaper cards, trade for a profit... aren't worth the effort.
