It was a republic, although one particular, very scheming and deceitful person managed to gain power in the senate... This is actually why I don't like democracies; such power is a breeding ground for intrigues and corruption, which are practically impossible to overcome without an iron fist. This person initiated one grand project, and when enemies attacked the country, he got scared and decided to launch it without conducting final tests. His argument was: we built it for such cases, even if we didn't finish it completely, I know best! Well, and you can guess what happened next. A leak of infinite mana turned the city and a large area around it into a wasteland... But not the whole world, and not even the whole country, although all of this had unlimited potential for growth, and what happened to my world centuries later, I honestly don't know. I once had ambitions to stop that device, but I failed, unfortunately.
