For the beauty contest, Varya tried to put herself together, work on her hairstyle, and wear her most beautiful dress (actually, practically the only dress she had for going out, a black one). The narrow cut allowed her to emphasize her "tall" figure – although if the event takes place on stage, of course, there won't be much of a difference, in any case, the viewer's gaze will be directed slightly from below upwards. Varya was, of course, quite nervous: how many people will be there, three hundred strangers? And maybe someone will buy souvenirs from her, and magazines... She hoped she wouldn't be jinxed, of course, because these aren't just superstitions, bad magic of that kind is quite real.
