Hobgoblin doubles the population, and the "month of hobgoblins" is the same thing; it's just that the translations can be different.
As far as I know, these are two different things... - the month doesn't double the population in the castle. For example: there's a "month of pegasus" event, and what? They don't increase in number by 2.
