I didn't watch it; I actually rewatched it. And I cried again, just as I did the first time I saw it...
Miyazaki usually likes mythological or fairytale themes, or stories about the future. This film is a noteworthy exception; it's more historical, dramatic, and quite realistic, although he did allow himself a small fantastical exaggeration, but presented it as vivid dreams. This film is about beauty, mutual help, conquering something new and unknown, love, and loss. And it's very much about life – you find some similarities and parallels; you want your life to be like the life of the main character, but at the same time, you don't want it, you're afraid of it.
