Psycho-Pass (2014, series)
This is exactly what I wanted to watch. Seriously, it's emotionally engaging, and the world looks (at least initially) quite good.
The main character, Akane, is well-developed; she starts as an inexperienced and somewhat whiny character, but her evolution is shown very well. And her colleagues are likable from the start – some for their intelligence (Kogami), others for their philosophical and calm nature (Masaoka), and the rest are also good... It's genuinely interesting that, apart from some minor villains, no one evokes strong negative feelings; everyone is interesting in their own way, and everyone fits their role.
Now, for the downsides. There's a bit too much excessive and brutal violence, especially in the first half of the series. As well as too many creepy Japanese faces (also in the first half). Perhaps this serves some purpose, like showing how easily people's mental state can deteriorate in such a society, but I think it's not necessary to degrade everything so much (in all senses of the word) to convey this idea. After all, the villains who don't have these flaws also demonstrate everything well.
The second thing that seemed strange to me is the idea that in such a society, everyone is so worried about their crime coefficients. Even now, in developed countries, crime (not among various immigrants or within obviously disadvantaged areas where the middle class doesn't live) is not something that everyone thinks about 24/7. In the society shown to us, there is a very strict control, which should, in theory, make crime something rare. Therefore, it's unclear why people should worry about these "nuances." Unless it's from the point of view of mental balance, and not constant fear that the system will decide that you're going to start cutting people.
And third, there's a spoiler, but those who have seen (or will see) it will understand. In short, there's one plot twist that seems unexpected in its own way, but on the other hand, it's more likely pulled out of thin air, and in the end, it somewhat undermines the realism of the world's structure. Although mainly from a technological point of view.
Overall, it's quite good... I'll give it an 8/10. I don't know, maybe I'm too generous with these ratings, but compared to the rest of my list, it's about that.
