As someone not very familiar with the setting, I enjoyed it. It's not exactly amazing; much of it is quite predictable, and in some places, even surprisingly so, but it's still a good story. Pikachu's charisma carries it a lot. And yes, the genre is definitely not detective; it's more of an adventure.
Sometimes you wonder, if people who are already familiar with the universe watch it, won't they find it extremely boring to watch the same Pokémon for the hundred and fiftieth time (or, if you count honestly, the thousandth five hundredth time)? In any case, that doesn't concern me.

The Monster ("L'animal" with Belmondo)
A comedy where it's hard to predict the main character's next move. It's about relationships and physical injuries. It's fun. But, like many films of that time, towards the end, you feel a slight drag.
The question of why the main character so persistently pursues a rather unpleasant main character remained unanswered for me... He's not exactly a saint himself, of course, but still.
