A couple of years ago, I wrote my opinion on this matter; since then, it hasn't changed much.

Since then, HotA has gained at least one very strong strategic advantage specifically designed for online play – the template editor.
However, this advantage needs time to materialize (and even more importantly, at least 2-3 skilled players who are interested in the topic and can contribute something).
