The idea described is not at all absurd; at the beginning of my Heroes journey, I only played like this with friends – in hotseat mode, without looking away from the screen during the other player's turn. The games were quite engaging. Moreover, they were shorter – if someone gained an unrecoverable advantage, there was no need to waste time finishing them off.
Memories came flooding back: 5th year of university, deadlines for writing my thesis were looming. And I got a computer. Hotseat, back then it was the second Heroes game, the three of us. We'd sit down at 5 pm and leave around 7 am. I'm still ashamed of the quality of my thesis... It's amazing that they even accepted it... What a blessing that the third Heroes game wasn't out yet; it was released only a year later...
P.S. And about the game itself. I remember that it almost always turned out like this: two players would reach the final, and the third would finish off the winner.
