As Tsukiko descends almost to the very bottom, she steps into something sticky, smelly, and unpleasant.

I don't understand what's so special about it; we're in the sewers.
She carefully lifts her foot and examines whether this "something" is a slimy monster or something corrosive. If it's nothing special, she continues her descent.
