Regarding Alex, it's simple – someone has to pull him. Of course, the commander should designate beforehand, "You, pull the first one, then immediately pull another one, for that comrade who's unconscious." Randomness doesn't affect this.
Or, you can make an agreement with Alex himself, directly, but I'm not sure he'll agree.
