Reading minds in the palace probably isn't something anyone can do. Lightning looks super useful, especially since it's reusable. It's unlikely you can make the stats worse for yourself. If you can, then the enemy wasn't well-leveled, and we can defeat him anyway. The Ruby Ring is a good item. If you can afford both a scroll and a ring, I would take the ring.
