I managed to unlock all the upgrades without any losses. It seems you didn't use the Demon Gate against neutral creatures. Killing 170 Lava Dragons is easy! But angels and titans are a problem, that's for sure. 100 priests are also not a big deal; their Fireball is weak, but you can survive.
