6. Knights - Paladins - Cuirassiers

They appeared in the 16th century in many European countries as heavy cavalry, created to compensate for the small number of knightly cavalry and dressed in relatively inexpensive incomplete armor, covering two-thirds of the body – from head to knees, and called cuirassier armor.

They used horses of heavy breeds weighing 600–700 kg.

light cavalry (classic hussars, chevau-légers, Mamluks, light dragoons, horse rangers, lisowczycy, equites) used horses weighing up to 450–500 kg;
medium (linear) cavalry (winged hussars, dragoons, lancers, cataphracts, hetairoi) – from 450-500 to 600 kg;
heavy cavalry (cuirassiers, carabiniers, horse grenadiers, cavalry guards, reiters) – over 600 kg; (knights, gendarmes) – over 800 kg.
