Starting armies are good for a quick start only in the first week; by the second week, the city's development reaches its peak, and the main forces are recruited from there. A level 1 Paladin is useful in any case, at least for healing. Therefore, it's not even necessary to upgrade the horses.
Starting armies are designed to:
- Clear light guards with auto-combat (chests, passages/portals) ~25% ED (equivalent to a dragon).
- Clear medium guards manually (mines, dwellings of tiers 1-2, upgrade buildings) ~50% ED.
- Combined with the second starting army or after receiving some reinforcements from the city, clear strong guards manually (gold mines, villages, minor artifacts, dwellings of tiers 3-4) ~ 1 ED.
More powerful guards:
~ 2 ED (cities, major artifacts, small banks, dwellings of tiers 5-6).
~ 4 ED (dwellings of tier 7, large cities, relics, medium banks).
~ 8 ED (large banks, utopias).
City limits have been reduced from 3-15 to 1-12, meaning Knights (and sometimes Angels) can be deployed as early as the first week.
