There's nothing about it in the rules... but still... I think that if there's a guard, it should be killed first, and not to take advantage of the mapmaker's unfinished work. As for why I didn't ask, I thought it was obvious, like a default setting (if there's a guard, kill it, and then take what you want).
And during the blitz tournaments, that's all they talked about – that you can't use this or that until you kill the guard.
Didn't you think that this might be the mapmaker's intention? And in the blitz, where it wasn't allowed to take artifacts from under the enemy, it was always additionally announced.
