You say children's stories. Hmm. I would say not-so-children's stories. The first book about Harry Potter came to me when I was 19, and that one might be for children. But the further you go, the more it's for adults, very adult people. So, try reading Tove Jansson or The Golden Key, or The Wizard of Oz (not to be confused with Volkov) now. You might be very surprised.
