Here, "elitism" definitely plays a role, which cannot be said about collecting something modern.

In my opinion, elitism is evident in both cases.
However, creations from the past may have a factor that increases their value: these individuals were pioneers in a particular genre/style/idea. Perhaps that's why the aforementioned "Dark Messiah" is so popular, as there are no other reasons...
