And wealth doesn't define social status, although it does correlate. In a fictional world, this is even more true. You can be a cool and famous wandering Knight, for example, spreading good and justice, and not profiting from helping those in need (and what you earn, you give to those who need it more).
What's more, in one famous fantasy world, there was even a king who was a homeless person.
