Might and Magic: Heroes Kingdoms was a browser-based, real-time massively multiplayer strategy game set in the Heroes of Might and Magic universe, developed and published by Ubisoft. Its Asian versions (China, Taiwan, Korea) were run by Ubisoft's Chengdu studio.
History
- Announced in 2007, with closed betas running until 2009.
- Released in France on 3 November 2009.
- On 22 January 2014 the administration announced the servers would close at the end of August; they went offline on 1 September 2014.
How it played
- Five playable factions: Haven, Academy, Necropolis, Inferno and Sylvan.
- Each player held cities on a tiled world map. A region was 5×5 zones around a central city, and four of those zones held resource mines.
- Resources: gold, ore, wood, mercury, crystals, sulfur and gems.
- A game world lasted about six months, and players carried bonuses into the next one.
Business model
Marketed as free-to-play, but a non-paying player was limited to three heroes and three towns for the first two months, then gained one extra hero and one extra town per month. A monthly subscription lifted the limits and added bonuses; virtual goods were also sold.
Not to be confused with Heroes of Might and Magic Online, a different MMO of the same era.
