Amidst the chaos and confusion, two spies – an old one and a young one who arrived at the base a few days ago – sat down in a secluded corner, lit cigarettes, and started a conversation. The seasoned spy told his young comrade old, good spy stories, and he had a truly vast collection of them. Suddenly, a small black kitten ran out from around the corner, sat down not far from the talking spies, and began to groom itself. Noticing the kitten, the old spy beckoned it over, petted it a couple of times, and poured some milk; but, strangely, the kitten didn't even look at the bowl of white liquid. Then the old spy put the bowl away, sighed, and began to tell his story:
-It's strange, where could a kitten have come from on the base? Well, never mind, these elusive and mysterious creatures can get everywhere. Everyone has different attitudes towards them: some love them, some even adore them, believing that they are much wiser than humans and that they hold secrets that even their relative, the Sphinx, doesn't know. There are also those who hate them fiercely, and there is one such person among us. Her callsign is Happy Girl; you've already met her at this base. She always took particular pleasure in catching and killing all the cats she encountered. Why she does this is unknown, but in any case, she clearly enjoys getting rid of another cat that has the misfortune to cross her path, and, judging by the sounds I sometimes hear, the methods of killing were elaborately cruel. Once, an unusual spy arrived at our base from a spy school; everyone was amazed by his strange prayers and his bizarrely decorated personal belongings: he drew creatures with human bodies and the heads of cats, hawks, sheep, or lions. And this spy loved his fluffy, playful black kitten very much. But just a couple of days ago, he couldn't find his kitten anywhere. I told him about Happy Girl and her hatred of the feline race. After listening to me, he pondered for a moment, and then began to pray to his own, different gods in a language that no one understood…
The spy interrupted his story to catch his breath; at that moment, he noticed two more furry creatures:
-No, no, this is really strange. Where did the cats come from on the base? Let's go take a look.
They put out their cigarettes, stood up, and went in the direction from which the cats had appeared. Along the way, they met several more cats of various colors: striped, spotted, ginger, white, and gray. Finally, they came across a human skeleton that had been gnawed clean. Next to the skeleton lay a cigarette case that once belonged to Happy Girl…
