Over the last 3 years, I've managed to watch many series, but after watching the 1st season of Spartacus, I realized it is the best series of my life, rating 10 out of 10. The series begins to captivate from the first episode and doesn't let go until the very last moment. It's perfect for all lovers of historical films! Historical plot, beautiful and high-quality screen adaptation, a sea of blood and sex, as well as intrigue and a bit of love. This is exactly how I imagined Ancient Rome and gladiators! The film was apparently shot using the same technologies as the recent "300", which makes it special. Firstly, the actors are beautifully chosen and know their craft; secondly, the plot of the film unfolds with the most unexpected scenes. The acting is at a high level; more than once I found myself worrying about the characters. Everyone was able to fully convey the character of their persona. The actors are magnificent, especially Spartacus (Andy Whitfield). Andy Whitfield performed his role brilliantly! Professionally, not overacted—you get so used to this image of Spartacus that another one is no longer perceived. Unfortunately, the actor passed away from blood cancer on September 11, 2011.

The series consists of 4 parts:

1. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena - this is the so-called prequel
2. Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Season 1)
3. Spartacus: Vengeance (Season 2)
4. Spartacus: War of the Damned (Season 3)

And now about my impressions. Perhaps that's how it was in those distant times when there was slavery and gladiatorial fights were held. Gladiators were prepared as ruthless killing machines, and there was only one choice—fight or die. And yet, for them, it was an honor to fight in the arena. What character, to be a slave but to take pride in performing in the bloody lists for the glory of their masters! The same can be said about the explicit sexual scenes—slaves were treated however they pleased. After all, they weren't considered human; they were property—things. The entire series runs on emotion, on tension, on a wild thirst for revenge and blood; blood flows like a river. In a way, in some places, the revenge is noble. I can say that the final episode was filmed so poignantly that I really wanted Spartacus to stay alive and his cause to win, although history cannot be changed... The director thought through many things, for which I thank him separately. Of course, the film is not for family viewing: lots of blood and bedroom scenes, but that is its own quirk. The main character wins you over at first sight. But Crixus and Gannicus turned out to be no less likable, in my opinion. There are many moments in the film where either tears well up or you cry secretly. And besides all this, love and loyalty are at the center of attention. Thanks to the special effects, the series turned out to be exciting, beautiful, "modern," bright, and memorable.
I cannot say that the series is purely for men; there are quite colorful female characters in the series, and if anyone thinks the series is too cruel: too much blood, sex—watch soap operas. My personal opinion is that all this only benefits the series; these were cruel times, and people back then were tougher, as was life; there were fewer pink snotties then, and blood flowed in rivers. I found no downsides in Spartacus; I liked everything. However, I do not recommend it for highly impressionable, sensitive people with unstable psyches, nor for children. I recommend it for adults. To summarize, this series is the only one where I waited for every episode with impatience. I wish everyone to watch it to understand their values in life, their ideals, and to never give up, no matter what happens!
To be honest, there is no series like this, and likely won't be, but for lovers of high-quality atmospheric cinema that you want to watch many times, forgetting about time AND IMMERSING YOURSELF IN THE ATMOSPHERE, I can recommend a few things as alternatives:

I recommend watching a modern Russian series about the 90s - yellow eye of the tiger:

1988, Kaliningrad. Four best friends celebrate their school graduation and share plans for the future, dreaming of connecting their lives with amber. But the amber business turns former young dreamers into greedy, cold-blooded businessmen, who are not even averse to theft and murder.
