The collision had to occur at a precisely chosen angle: a right angle would have destroyed the Earth, while a shallower angle would have resulted in the other planet simply ricocheting off the Earth. Tides caused by the Moon stabilized the Earth's axis; without the Moon's influence, its oscillations (precession) would have been much greater and would have led to dramatic climate changes, potentially destroying life on Earth. Lunar tides likely heated the Earth's core, which must be molten to generate a magnetic field.
