That's exactly what happened. I didn't find any combat magic or a red orb; even a cloak would have helped. I made a mistake – I should have spent more time gathering resources and upgrading the angels before heading to the center. But I was tempted by the teapot first, and then by the Sword of Justice in the central treasure, and things went downhill from there... I was defeated by an implosion.
I tried to jump around, but it was pointless after that.

The distribution with the wolf external dwelling didn't reset; Albert requested a dragon dwell. I didn't play very great, making only one good move during the entire game: at 133, having taken two Dragon Utopias, I used a portal to Inferno to assemble an army in the Castle of the just-captured computer player. At 134, I would have moved toward the end in the center with parameters 30 20 18 16, but Albert decided not to continue.
PS. Got a bit lucky with the layout; I took the Dragon Utopia at 127 already having the assembled elixir.
