Mark
Madinia is a land of opportunity, art, and progress, a realm of magic and personal freedom, a center of culture and trade. It should come as no surprise that people and non-humans from all corners of the world flock here every day. There is almost nothing one cannot find here; everything is available to suit any taste.
Driven by a thirst for a good life and his own youthful ambitions, Mark's father, while still a young man, traveled a very long distance before he managed to step across the threshold of the land of his dreams, but it was certainly worth it — from the first day of his stay here, he already saw numerous paths of life stretching out before him. Having certain work experience in trade, the ambitious foreigner was hired by a good company, which provided him with a stable income and opportunities for career growth. Wishing to sever ties with his homeland and look more like a resident of this magnificent country, he changed his family name to a Madinian one, calling himself August. He also planned to give his children, whom he intended to have as soon as his economic situation allowed him to provide them with an education and prosperity, same Madinian-style names.
The result of fifteen years of hard and honest work was wealth own by the standards of an ordinary person. August acquired a luxurious estate built from scratch to his taste and soon married a Madinian beauty — her slender figure, aristocratic features, raven-colored hair, and refined taste in clothing enslaved his heart at first sight. No later than two years later, the young family had their first child — a boy. August was incredibly happy about this event; he planned to raise his son in the best possible environment and give him the best education that money could buy.
Despite all the difficulties at the start of his journey, the foreigner's life had been blissful since the moment he moved to this wonderful country. Indeed, a resident of any hole like Ryorvalia or Seveseptim might think that August lived in paradise, for he had everything an ordinary person could desire. Nevertheless, in the eyes of the greedy businessman, this was not enough; he wanted much more and did not intend to stop on the path to his dream. Considering himself a veteran of trade, the new father left the company where he had worked since his first year of life in Madinia and started his own business, using the funds accumulated over long years of work. In the beginning, everything was fine and the new business promised to be profitable, but in the world of trade, insignificant entrepreneurs unprotected by huge reserves and connections in influential circles were very fragile; any shift in the economy could turn a profitable business into nothing. This is exactly what happened to August's company; at some point, the company's income stopped covering its expenses and capital began to rapidly leave not only the company itself but also the family savings. Soon, borrowing money became necessary just to stay afloat. More, and more, and more, until the unlucky entrepreneur was forced to sell everything he had acquired over the years... The epilogue of this story was prosaic: unable to withstand the stress, August committed suicide, and the mother, unwilling to spend years of her life on a child who would bring her nothing but waste of money and nerves, gave him up to an orphanage.

“Grey and cold” — these are the words Mark might use to describe his childhood. The orphanage caregivers did not care about the well-being of their charges; the only thing that concerned them was that they didn't starve to death and didn't slack off from work, for, naturally, they didn't live here for free — they mopped floors, gathered berries and mushrooms, slogged in the fields, chopped trees in the forest, and did whatever else was required. Some of those who were older worked in the city and gave their earned money to the "orphanage reserve."
Compared to the masterpiece structures of Madinia, the place where Mark lived was a pitiful imitation of architectural work. An ugly structure resembling barracks was built far from the city; thin walls let the wind through, and the ceiling leaked. Only the caregivers' rooms were made of quality material and well-heated. There was one more flaw to this wretched building — creaking doors and floors. Eyes filled with rage met any unlucky child who for some reason needed to leave the bedroom during the night, as one of the caregivers woke up at any noise and became very angry when awakened earlier than he desired. Often, this anger escalated into beatings.
It was quite expected that these children, enduring terrible treatment from the caregivers and being so unfortunate in life, suffered from severe stress; anger accumulated and needed to be vented somewhere. But on whom? The answer is obvious — on their brothers in misfortune. In this regard, Mark was in the red zone; he took the brunt of it. Being a brave boy by nature, he was always ready to stand up for himself, but what could one child do against organized bullying? They laughed at him for his "girly appearance," as the most hideous children put it, pulled him by the hair, poured mud into his boots, sabotaged his housework, tripped him when he least expected it, and did many other things. There was no solidarity among the disadvantaged children, and Mark himself hated his brothers and sisters, considering them stupid, vicious animals.
The stronghold of his sanity was the forest that surrounded the orphanage building. There, the boy hid from all his problems, played with the inhabitants of the forest, and rested, enjoying rare moments of peace and joy. One day he thought that the work he was obliged to do had its pluses, as it allowed him to acquire various skills, some useful and some not. This thought came to him after he, while walking through the blissful forest, decided to carve himself a bow and arrows from wood. The quality was, of course, extremely low, but the boy was happy with his new toy, the fruit of his own manual labor. He began practicing shooting and, over time, it became a kind of meditation for him. He hid the tools and results of his woodwork in his secret cache in the forest, and as months passed, the quality of the weapons increased and his marksmanship became more elegant and effective.***
On one cold winter day, an event unique in Mark's life occurred — for the first time in long years of staying in this place, someone appeared for the purpose of adoption. It was a plump Madinian woman of about forty. Her gaze was very kind, and her smile revealed a person of the purest soul. Naturally, many children saw in her a ray of hope and desperately wanted her to take them away from this terrible place. Mark was no exception — despite his natural skepticism, a similar hope crept into his heart. What if this woman becomes his family and a path to a normal future opens up for him? It certainly couldn't be worse than here. But, it seemed, what were the chances that she would choose specifically him? There were so many of them here.
To Mark's joy, that is exactly what happened — the woman's choice fell on him. The reason was extremely simple, though few knew about it: he was more beautiful than all the others.
A beautiful sunset accompanied Mark's departure from the orphanage into a new life. At the time, he could not believe that this was actually happening to him and was not a dream. He would, of course, miss the cozy forest where he had spent many joyful moments, but his companions or caregivers? Never.
Compared to Mark's past experience, life with Agnia (that was the woman's name) was incredible. For the first time in his life, someone treated him with warmth; he could eat well and sleep without worrying about further pranks from the surrounding "animals." But this was only at the beginning; days flew by like the wind, followed by weeks and months, and over time it became clear that a rotten heart and an angry temperament were hidden behind the Madinian woman's kind smile. The woman punished the child cruelly for the slightest offenses, tirelessly spitting phrases from her thick lips such as "who do you think you are?!" and "if it weren't for me, you would have just rotted there!". Mark endured this treatment in silence, escaping problems, as before, through shooting.***
When he was seventeen, Mark, tired of such a life and having gained confidence in his strengths, ran away from home. At the time, he didn't know how he would earn a living, but thanks to that same orphanage, he possessed a wide set of abilities and skills, so he thought he would somehow manage not to perish in this world. Ironically, his source of bread and shelter became his beloved shooting — he discovered with surprise that his skill was at a quite high level, and skilled archers were needed everywhere.
It came as a surprise to his new comrades how easily the young shooter took the life of his first target — he had neither fear nor remorse, as if he had simply plucked a flower growing in a field. Perhaps this was the result of the environment in which he grew up and his upbringing (or lack thereof), but he had his own vision of things. He did not take pleasure in maiming or killing others; no, specifically to that, he was indifferent, but he always received sincere pleasure from shooting, and a human has always been and remains the best target.
Over time, art in its numerous manifestations became his new passion. Even if the bulk of people and non-humans inhabiting this world were nothing more than trash, he highly valued the fruits of human labor and the beauty of a mind capable of such wonders. Subsequently, this grew into something more; Mark liked everything beautiful and loathed everything hideous, including people. He could not help but be delighted by the beauty of a painting or a human face, the magnificence of a musical composition or a mesmerizing landscape... He valued everything that he considered beautiful in his personal understanding of the word. ***
Years passed. The defenseless boy remained in the past, giving way to a young man confidently stepping into tomorrow.
"Mark... What a stupid name," — thought the archer, looking back at his past.
