Suggest a Windows version. I need it for experimenting with software that doesn't require a lot of resources. I don't plan on using demanding software like Photoshop or playing games. It will run on a virtual machine with a 10 GB disk and 1 GB of RAM. What version are you currently using? Will it run with 1 GB of RAM? In short, what would you recommend installing?

Install Win 95, it's perfectly fine, I guarantee it.

Could you explain why XP wasn't chosen from the start? Windows 7 should run fine on 1 GB of RAM, especially if all the unnecessary features are disabled, but it seems like in this case, the "simpler is better" rule applies. Or am I wrong?

The old version used to work fine, but since I couldn't restore the backup and will have to create a new virtual machine, I was wondering if I should install a newer version.

I'm a newbie, I voted for the seventh game because I'm currently playing it.

In my opinion, if a 64-bit system is needed (if the RAM is 4 GB or more), then Windows 7 is the way to go. But if it's not needed (judging by the 1 GB of RAM, it isn't), then Windows XP is better.

Windows XP was great and still is. If you have a decent motherboard, partition your HDD into two logical drives. Install two copies of Windows XP on each. Store documents in a shared folder accessible to all four Windows XP installations. SUPER RELIABLE! If one crashes, you still have three others, and so on. Windows 7 is for poor motherboards that can't run Windows XP and for pixel-obsessed, low-quality gamers and designers.

Thank you for the advice. Another question: Which Windows installation will it load by default? I couldn't find such settings in the BIOS.

The one that was installed last will be at the top. But you can change the order of Windows startup in the settings. And, you don't need to install an antivirus on one of the Windows installations.

You split the HDD into two logical drives. You install two Windows XP on each.

I wouldn't recommend installing two or more operating systems on one partition. If you really want 4 Windows XP (but why, actually???), it's better to split the disk into 4 parts...
