Ah, hard is the life in the dungeons of Ertenia: darkness, dampness, dust, dirt, meager rations, claustrophobia, extreme temperatures, lava lakes, monsters, mutants, tribes of cannibals from dead-end evolutionary branches, raids by slave traders and bounty hunters, expeditions of "heroes", cults of dark gods, competition for living space, earthquakes, diseases, flooding, collapses, endless abysses, deadly traps. No one else has experienced as many hardships firsthand as the Assarians—a people of suffering, a people of refugees. Therefore Eiza, like all her relatives and acquaintances from the small community where she was born and lived, understood from her earliest years that the world is a cruel place: either it eats you, or you eat it.
It wasn't that she never thought about escaping to the surface, but in her established paradigm of views, the surface space was no better than what they had. Unfortunately, the negative trend was visible to the naked eye—after several particularly unpleasant underground cataclysms, the Assarian population decreased significantly, and fewer new members of society were born than old ones died. Eiza, stubborn and stoic like all her people, tightened her belt and was ready to fight and serve for the good of the community until the very end, but the underground god had another plan for her.
One day, as always, she was patrolling the remote perimeter of the Assarian domain, a particularly dangerous part of which ran along the shore of a black bottomless lake. This section was made dangerous by fish-man mutants who periodically crawled ashore and set ambushes in the nearby tunnels, but on this day it was suspiciously quiet. The girl walked silently over slippery stones, her keen eyes scanning every dark nook—of which there were many, for the darkness in the caves was pitch black, and the cursed fish-men had long ago gnawed away all the fluorescent growth from the dungeon walls. After a while, a pungent smell of decay hit her nostrils, and moments later she discovered its source—a geometrically perfect pyramid of gnawed fish-man bodies covered in slime had been carefully laid on the shore a step away from the water's edge. Eiza caught her breath and decided to examine this construction more closely before turning back to report what she saw to the garrison, but as soon as she stepped off the rock, something surprisingly hot, slippery, and very strong shot out of the water like a bullet and wrapped around her leg.
The Assarian reacted even before she saw what had attacked her, but the instantly fired arrow caused the creature no harm. Several more tentacles broke through the surface of the water—as it turned out, that's exactly what they were—each of them pinned the girl's body and dragged her from the shore into the icy water. The black water made it impossible to see the monster, but some distance from the site of the struggle, an endless stream of air bubbles rose from the depths. A suddenly appearing appendage with a very strange shape at the end, oozing the same foul slime she had seen on the pyramid of bodies, traveled across the Assarian's skin, evidently testing her for suitability as food. The areas of the body surface that came into contact with the slime felt a strange burning and tingling. Twisting and putting in all her strength, Eiza managed to draw a knife from her hip with one hand and slash the disgusting manipulator. Foul green "blood" flew in all directions, the stream of bubbles intensified several times over, the graspers trembled, and a powerful roar echoed from beneath the water's mass. Another tentacle wrapped around the girl's neck and began to strangle her. Losing the strength to resist, the Assarian went limp in the grip of the underwater monster and accepted her fate. In the last fragments of consciousness, she saw imaginary lights and an incomprehensible noise through a darkening gaze.
Coming to on satin sheets, Eiza could not emerge from her stupor for some time. Her vacant gaze looked through the window into the distance, at a wedge of migrating birds and lazily floating clouds.
- She's awake! - came an elderly cry that snapped the Assarian out of her daze. - Master!
Eiza turned with difficulty and saw the nurse, who until then had been snoring peacefully in her chair. The girl became anxious, wanting to throw off the blanket and strangle the loud old woman, but found that her limbs barely moved.
- Do not disturb your organism, lady, - came a soothing velvety voice from the doorway. - For you are already halfway to recovery.
The speaker was a tall black-haired man with piercing eyes and olive skin.
- You are completely safe here, - he smoothly extended his hand toward Eiza, but respectfully maintained his distance. - My name is Kassad, and you are in my humble dwelling, in the infirmary. And what is your name?
The Assarian looked at the surface-dweller silently and suspiciously from under her brow.
- As you wish, - Kassad smiled. - I will not pry. I simply wanted to ensure that you are in good health. I understand this is a shock for you; you barely survived.
The man told the girl how, by a fortunate chance, his archaeological group stumbled upon a mysterious dungeon not marked on any map and reached that very underground lake at the most desperate moment. He lost several good people, but they managed to kill the beast from the abyss and fish the unconscious Assarian out of the water. Realizing that the difficulty of further travel exceeded their capabilities, Kassad ended the expedition and the squad returned home—to the city of Onitan. There, his best palace physicians made every effort to save the girl's life, and he himself ordered the entrance to those horrifying tunnels to be blocked.
- I apologize for all the stress you have endured, but the laws of my house oblige me to help everyone in distress. Upon recovery, you are free to leave both my palace and Onitan, but I would like to offer you a stay with us, at least until full rehabilitation, - Kassad bowed low. - I hope I have not overly fatigued you. I will leave you to rest and regain your strength; do not worry about anything.
- Eiza, - Eiza said to his back, turned away, and fell into sleep.
Getting on her feet after a few days, the Assarian discovered the surface world and a new concept of luxury. Kassad showed her around the palace and gardens, joked, shared the history of these places and his own past; he was attentive and polite, but demanded nothing in return from her. The experience of contact with Onitan differed radically from encounters with thugs who descended into dungeons in search of loot, and reminded her of her native community, only under completely different conditions. However, most rituals of the surface dwellers were still not entirely clear to her. Kassad said that if Eiza wished, he only had to snap his fingers and a thousand slaves would clear the rubble so the girl could return home, but after a strong internal struggle, she decided to live in these amazing conditions for some time.
Days passed, then weeks, and then months; Eiza settled in and asked Kassad a question that proved uncomfortable for him—why, at his mature age, did he still have no life partner or children? The aristocrat turned pale, then red, and confessed that he disliked the polygamous laws of his society—he had spent his whole life searching for his one true love and didn't give a damn about the grumbling of the courtiers. At this point, he became completely embarrassed, then dropped to one knee, took the Assarian's hand, and confessed that he had already found his only one, having fallen in love with her at first sight. He proposed marriage to her, and Eiza agreed.
They were wed and for a while everything went perfectly, but the grumbling did not stop. Such an exotic marriage caused fits of bile among the malicious tongues at court and within Kassad's social circle, and they began to actively pour it into the groom's ears. Bound by public opinion, family honor, and the laws of the land, the nobleman lost himself, and his attitude toward his wife also began to change.
After some time, things became so acute that the Assarian began to feel like a powerless exotic animal, with smirking "friend"-aristocrats poking her in the back with their fingers, generating own same-old ideas, and Kassad was forced to change his attitude along with them. Added to this were his financial problems during that difficult period and dependence on others' favor, so the unhappy husband lost the feeling of selfless love and turned into a tyrant.
With a heavy heart, Eiza realized that her visit to Onitan could be considered concluded, so she decided to leave, first leaving a piece of Assarian justice in this city. One night, after a sandstorm had driven all rare passersby home and Kassad and his friends were spending time merrily in a small hall, the servants brought them a barrel of contraband spirits from distant lands, in which an imperceptible extract of Bubonka Mushroom—an incredibly poisonous growth found underground in those climatic conditions—had been mixed.
She did not intend to return underground, so having finished all her business, the girl left the city and a short series of wanderings led her to Iltan, where she settled for a time, finding housing and an easy job.
