Posts from Warlock – “Cultist” [Campaign 4, Mission 3]
I always have the same problem: I manage to capture 5 castles (and there are supposedly 7), but then the Demon Lord comes with a decent army, and Blue somehow gets Knights and Angels from somewhere!
Demons appear after capturing every other castle. The order of capturing castles is mentioned above in the thread.
To complete the game, try lowering the difficulty and/or not taking too long; completing this campaign 100% depends on being active at the beginning.

Well, I don't know... In my early battles, I usually had losses of 1-2 minotaurs + about 5 beasts... Even the first sorceresses usually survived until the middle of the mission... I just put everyone in reserve except for the minotaurs, beasts, and assassins - they shoot and poison, I summon a phoenix - it also deals good damage, and then a couple of casts of Magic Dart - and the enemy is dead. I took down the Dragon Utopia by using 7 assassins, defeating them one by one in each slot...

And I didn't teach Railag MD, and Shadia, who had MD, didn't want to share it with him...
I had the learning skill maxed out, and Shadia had Chaos and Dark Magic, while Railag had Chaos and Summoning. Only, in my case, Railag taught Shadia all the spells (except Darkness). I simply built up the guilds in all the castles in the "Expansion" to the maximum - MD in the Dungeon is a frequent spell, and Phoenix too - and then there were no problems.

If that doesn't work, I'll try to do it as Nightly Edelweiss suggests. I really don't want to give the enemy the cities that I've conquered with so much effort.

I left the purchased former enemy heroes to defend. I simply didn't have enough money for troops, and there were serious resource problems (primarily with ore), so I couldn't build many dwellings, which meant there weren't many creatures in the cities. But I had plenty of experience. I completely ignored upgrading Shadia – she was just a loyal retainer, and I had Railag visit upgrade locations (there aren't many of them, if any at all – I don't remember exactly) and built intrigue chambers everywhere. As a result, in the last Campaign, Railag was the most powerful hero. Although, in general, I prefer Warlocks, and it's easiest for me to play as them.
In my opinion, the AI upgrades its hero in each city. Therefore, having two cities, you can assemble an army for your main hero that is almost twice as large as any enemy army.
I'm not sure if it's easier to play as Warlocks than as others (I don't know Druids and Mages at all, since I only play the Campaign), but, in my opinion, it's more interesting. They have so many good development options. It seems easier to play as Humans and Necromancers in 1.41. Hordes of crossbowmen and skeletons sweep away everyone.

To each their own. I, for example, can't stand Rangers in the fifth game. In my opinion, they are an absolutely useless hero who focuses on defense and a little bit of knowledge. But what's the point of knowledge when their magic is zero, and what's the point of defense when there's no attack at all? As a result, they are only good for defending cities. As an attacker, they are nothing special. Although, if they have a large numerical advantage over the enemy, with their speed, I still prefer open terrain rather than walls. Necromancers are also quite strong, but I just couldn't make it work with them... In general, to each their own... Humans have powerful Paladins, and if you train peasants into crossbowmen, you can gather a powerful force, but still, Warlocks are more enjoyable and interesting for me, even if their numerical growth is much smaller, because each unit is valuable.
By the way, I haven't played version 1.4; I still have 1.0 installed...

I was capturing mines along the way, but then the computer would recapture them. My goal was to complete the mission quickly with maximum hero development, so it was problematic to deal with the mines. As for troops, I would only reinforce myself if I was lucky and, while passing by a castle (or capturing an enemy castle), there were units available to hire (or at least the next day). Otherwise, I would just run further. Therefore, the enemy outnumbered me considerably. But the issue isn't about numbers...

The computer tells me the order in which to capture cities. I go where the most enemies are coming from, because they have moved troops away from there. This means it will be easier to capture the city. That's why Railag went to the portal near the first city.
I started playing with version 1.3. I played for a week, and then patch 1.4 was released. Before that, I hadn't played any of the Heroes games. In 1.4, they made it easier – now troops accumulate in dwellings. That's why I capture all enemy dwellings, even when I don't plan to buy troops there. I do it solely to destroy all the creatures. Otherwise, some enemy might wander in and buy up all the creatures that have accumulated over many weeks.
