Posts from The 3rd stage of the annual John Van Caneghem Tournament (2007).
Could you please elaborate on how it disappears and then reappears in the spellbook?
How much more detail can I provide...? The person stated that they haven't played Heroes of Might and Magic III in a long time and haven't encountered any scrolls... So, they made a mistake; nothing disappears or appears anywhere...
Тьма - это то, что позволяет смертным не забывать, как ярок бывает свет.
How could it be more detailed? The person wrote that they haven't played the third game in a long time and haven't encountered any scrolls... So, they simply made a mistake; nothing disappears into thin air...
Exactly, thanks, Alan :) Not only do I not remember, but they're also deliberately confusing things. I can't explain it any clearer than in my first message: To avoid using the bug of selling at an inflated price, artifacts must be sold ONLY from the hero, not from the backpack. PS. The last time I played the third game was twice here on this resource; now I'm playing the third game, and I don't remember ever finding a scroll. And here they're telling me what a powerful bug it is to sell scrolls at an inflated price, especially at the beginning of the game. This bug doesn't have a significant impact on official tournaments (unless a specific map is encountered). In my opinion, the most powerful bug is double casting – checking each battle for mana consumption is not easy, just like balancing income and expenses. But the double-cast bug can be used on any map and at the beginning of the game. It can be caught with careful checking. That's why saves at the beginning and end of each turn are needed, and this is stated in the rules, albeit poorly. What it means is that a save must be made every game day. Well, they'll send one save – the beginning of the first day, and another – the end of the second day. It can be checked, but the cost of checking will be higher. What's so difficult about writing in the rules – a minimum of two saves per day (beginning and end)? For super-difficult battles with numerous monster units, the player must have saves before and after the battle. This doesn't mean that they all need to be sent. The main thing is that, in case of a possible check, the player MUST provide them if the organizer needs them.

And here they are telling me what a powerful bug it is to sell scrolls at an inflated price, especially at the start of the game. This bug has little impact in an off-tournament (unless a very specific map is encountered). The most powerful bug imho is double cast — checking every battle for magic consumption is no easy task, as is balancing the books on money, by the way.
Life, esteemed Iron Axe, is not limited to games on this resource; people play everywhere, and not only in offline tournaments, which is why I am writing IN GENERAL. For me personally, the selling bug is the most powerful, because the double cast bug was forgotten long ago since it basically doesn't exist in 3.2, that's how it is. And by the start of the game, I mean, for example, the third week. I think it's realistically possible to collect several scrolls and get some powerful artifact in a couple of weeks. :smile01:
You understood perfectly correctly: if the scroll is on a hero, you can sell it, but if it's in the backpack, you need to first free up space on the hero, then move the scroll(s) to the empty slots on the hero, and then you can sell it again!
Hmm! And what? Does it become more expensive that way? Or what's the difference?
Life, dear Iron Axe, is not just about playing games on this resource; people play everywhere, and not just in offline tournaments, which is why I'm writing in GENERAL. For me personally, the bug with selling is the most significant because the double-cast bug has long been forgotten, as it doesn't even exist in 3.2. That's how it is. And by the beginning of the game, I mean, for example, the third week. I think it's quite possible to gather a few scrolls and get some powerful artifact in a couple of weeks. :smile01:
Can we determine from the sent save file which version it was made on? Until I know the answer to this question, I'm not sure if the bug is forgotten. The third week is already the middle or the end of the game for the leaders. And in this case, they absolutely don't care how much money you have accumulated. I'm not talking about this particular tournament game, but in general.
I hope that the respected participants will pay as much attention to the issue of completing the tournament map as they do to the issue of bugs.
I have no doubt that there is another way to complete it, but I will be very interested in your walkthrough, especially how and on what day you completed this battle. I assume that you completed it differently, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the result will be worse. It all depends on the player's skill and their comprehensive approach to completing the map. And by the way, you revealed a bit of your walkthrough. By asking VDV about changing the rules, you made it clear which of the ways to achieve victory on the map you chose :) But I don't think there's anything wrong with that, especially since you didn't do it intentionally.

Aha! "your words, and to God"
I don't think discussing bugs is a bad thing. There should be a clear list of prohibited bugs and allowed features in the rules. And I hope we will come to this. VDV_forever, in my opinion, understood this.
Considering that the goal of the tournament is to complete the map as quickly as possible, I am curious to know what I uncovered with my question, even without realizing it myself! But let's discuss this after the tournament is over. I will remind you if you forget.
I hope that the esteemed participants will pay as much attention to the issue of completing the tournament map as they do to the issue of bugs.
This was probably sarcasm. That is, the Great Gandalf wants to see in a topic where discussing the walkthrough of a scenario is prohibited, exactly that. But no, we'll have to wait until May. ;)
That's exactly what I'm talking about. The rules should be clear and not contain phrases like: "It is forbidden to use bugs," when, as we can see, many people don't know not only about specific bugs but also what a bug even is. :) For example, I don't know what version of the game I have (pirated or not) - it's not written anywhere, but it can't be patched. And here's an example: the Ballista bug: I'm fighting against slow units (they're all in one group), I have one fast unit and a ballista - there are no ammunition carts. The fast unit moves this group of monsters around the battlefield so that the monsters can't catch it, but they also don't attack the ballista. The ballista shoots at the monsters. The ballista has 24 shots. But what I see is that when the bullets run out, the ballista still shoots, and the remaining number of shots continues to be counted, only it goes into negative values (-1, -2, -3, etc.) and continues to deal damage to the enemy. The battle can theoretically be won, and with enough persistence and patience, it can be won in practice. Did many people know about this? Why shouldn't I use this in the game - it's clearly not forbidden. Let's say I'm so honest :) that I won't use it, but where is my guarantee that another player won't accidentally use it? Well, he doesn't look at the remaining number of shots - he just runs around and that's it. This isn't in the list of forbidden bugs, and the player isn't to blame for not being observant. And what am I to blame for, why should I be in unequal conditions with this player? If the bug were clearly forbidden, then we would all be in equal conditions. So, the question is - should I continue to shoot the ballista without ammunition or not? :D The rules don't say anything about this. And I don't know if it's a bug or not - maybe it's just a clever magical ballista. :) PS: And what exactly is the violation on the part of the player? He has the right to attack with a ballista and one unit against superior forces - he does. Then he simply doesn't want his unit to be killed and runs around. He can't stop the ballista - it shoots automatically. And so what? What is the violation? I also want to ask those who have a normal, patched version - is this bug (or not a bug) fixed there or not? If it's not difficult, please take a look.
I guess I'm just slow (or I was just too lazy to read everything carefully). Now I understand about the automated battle with the ballista. I just learned that the ballista is supposed to run out of ammunition, I always thought it had infinite ammunition, I never looked at the ballista's ammunition, it just keeps shooting. I don't know how it is in version 4.0, maybe it's been fixed, I always played on version 3.1, and there the ballista definitely has infinite ammunition. And how the number of shots changes over time, I don't know, I didn't look. Because I always thought it had infinite ammunition. :) Today I'll check in 4.0, maybe the ballista's ammunition does run out.
Added after 8 minutes And another question: Can I play on version 3.1 or is version 3.2 required? I just wanted to patch to 3.2, but the patch wouldn't install. Do I have version 4.0, can I play on it instead of 3.2? After all, the higher the version, the more bugs are fixed in the lower versions...

I have a question. Is it possible to distinguish saves, specifically to determine which version of the game they were made for? VDV allows playing with an unpatched version, but only if you don't use bugs. He listed the main bugs that are prohibited in this thread. If we remember or discover anything new, we will continue the list.

I also don't think it's a bad thing, BUT ONLY when it happens in the appropriate thread and at a different time (not when a tournament is being held). I have been convinced many times (in life) that the rules of the game should be discussed BEFORE the game starts; then no problems arise. But due to the fact that someone always doesn't understand something, it is impossible to avoid some clarifications. But you always need to understand what can be written openly, and what is better to ask the organizer personally. Let me give an example: if it is such a harmless thing as "which version can be played on," then I think you can safely write "for everyone." But if it is some subtle nuance of the game, for example, like with the ballista or the +5 monster week, then such a thing should be asked to the organizer in a private message. And he, in turn, can independently decide what to announce for everyone, and what to answer only to the person who asked the question. For example: the organizer can announce the +5 monster week to everyone!!! And regarding the ballista, it could have been answered personally (although I would get rid of this situation altogether using one of the known methods). And as a result, if you read this thread, and the "automatic ballista control" thread, you can not only make the same move for all participants, but also get a general picture of the gameplay. And if you try hard, you can even estimate the preliminary results table.
Alex R, you know how to read between the lines. Bravo! ...Just a little more, and we can post a single, collective walkthrough of the tournament map, again, only with good intentions, so that everyone is on a "level playing field".
