The implication was that they couldn't communicate (their mouths were sewn shut or something similar). But, given that they are scientists, they managed to complete the task.

I even have 2 options:
1) 8 women (4 loaves of bread), 4 men (8 loaves of bread)
2) 5 men (10 loaves of bread), 1 woman (0.5 loaves of bread), 6 children (1.5 loaves of bread)

I messed up, but I should be able to answer now. Light one lamp and wait for 5 minutes. Then turn it off, turn on another one, and go upstairs. The first lamp will be warm, the second will be lit, and the third will not be lit.
