Maybe it's a redundant idea, but why not create a chat parallel to this topic, analogous to the VT one. With ten clicks: tools -> mail and chat accounts -> add -> chat(irc) -> name+mail (any will do) -> nick -> OperaNet -> in the search field type hmm3 or find it in the list -> done.
This is in Opera8, it also works in the latest (12th) version.
