I think it's perfect. And try putting them under Shaka's command, with maximum defense, and with a resurrection tent...
Do they have low initiative? Well, there are shamans, there are artifacts, there's the war chief's battle cry, and the hero also has a battle cry to motivate them. And the fact that the stack will lose 1 Wyvern when hit by its own hero isn't a big deal.

To claim that wyverns are unnecessary is foolish. They are a pretty decent unit. For example, they annoy me. They constantly harass my mages and gremlins with their electricity. And the poisonous ones annoy me because they weaken rakshasa or djinn – the poison may be slow, but it works.

Wyverns only lack rage points, which makes them both better and worse.

I like Paoka for their high attack, and Dungeon for their intimidating appearance. But generally, I don't use them much. I prefer 2 stacks of Shamans instead.

I don't see much use for poison, although it might be good against a large number of wyverns. But electricity is more useful. Considering the corpse-eating ability, which not only revives units but also prevents raising the dead, my choice is paoka.

I like Ogres for their appetite and Demons for their impressive appearance. But generally, I don't use them much. I'd rather have 2 stacks of Shamans.

Imagine we're in a duel, you're an Orc and I'm an Orc. Our stats, skills, and army size are roughly the same. The only difference is that you have 2 stacks of 50 Shamans each, while I have one stack of 100 Shamans and 40 Wyverns. So, who's stronger?
Wyverns don't have Blood Fury, but their stats are decent. All Orcish creatures, except Cyclops and Wyverns, have lower stats than creatures from other factions. This is compensated by Blood Fury, which, in addition to increasing survivability, also significantly increases attack/defense and grants new abilities (each creature has its own bonuses from Blood Fury).
So, it doesn't make sense to consider them useless; their useful qualities have already been mentioned above. And to say that they are bad just because they are killed quickly... that's not very serious. It seems to you that they are quickly defeated because everyone else has Blood Fury. If Wyverns were in another faction, you wouldn't think so. But personally, they are rarely defeated in my games (except in final battles).
And one more thing, it's very important to consume the corpses of Angels and Paladins if the Knight has the "Guardian Angel" skill. In this case, they play a key role.

I would say the opposite – Dark Wyverns are good for a quick game, or if you have 15-20 of them. They regenerate and their poison is helpful against smaller creatures. But if you have 20+ Paoka, they will be more effective, and their attacks will be stronger than the meager damage from the Wyvern's breath, making it worthwhile to eat corpses.

Imagine this: an Orc versus a Haven in a rush. You have 15 Paoka, and they have 15 Knights. They attack your Paoka once, and you don't destroy anything, and there are no corpses. The Knights will quickly defeat the "goose." But if you have a Dark Wyvern, it will at least heal itself a bit during its turn, and it will also poison them, dealing 15-75 damage, which is almost like a Knight. It's more useful, and this Wyvern has a higher attack.

If you're playing against the undead, then Paoka are definitely a better choice than Wyverns. Poison doesn't work on the undead, and regeneration won't save you. Feeding the Wyvern bones is a good strategy, especially if you only have one stack of Wyverns left, and the enemy has 2-3 stacks of smaller units. Fly around, eat everything, and even throw some retaliation spells.

But electricity is actually more useful.

I don't understand why electricity is more useful (except perhaps against Necropolis and partially against Academy), the damage doesn't increase, but is distributed among all enemies standing in a group, so it seems like you hit, but you don't really kill anyone, and you even take damage in return from a stack that hasn't lost many units. Poison may be weak, but it ignores armor, does its thing for 3 turns, and the retaliation is much smaller. Paoka are great because of their ability to devour, they saved so many almost lost castle assaults...

Electricity affects archers.

I choose the Pao-Kai. For some reason, I liked them right away, although the Dark Wyverns are good too. Now I'm choosing the Dark Wyverns to compare and see which upgrade is better.

I think the Pao-Kai are better, although in terms of abilities, the Dark Wyverns might be slightly better.
