As an example of the importance of tactics and, secondly, the battlefield configuration, I'll tell you how I broke through the guard of 240 Azure Dragons, standing in the way, on the "Longest Journey" map.
I've already talked about this map and its walkthrough; now I'll just mention the key points: the player plays as the Tower faction. By this battle, the main hero has a large army of Tower troops, most of the spells, and a number of useful artifacts: Elixir of Life, Spirit of Despair, etc. However, there are no Spheres of Vulnerability.
I tried different options for conducting this battle, but none of them satisfied me, mainly because of the significant losses. :( It seemed that reducing them was problematic... until I finally came up with a solution.
Keep this in mind: it might be useful!
So, I... left almost all the troops in the city, and with a full mana pool and 89 Titans, I attacked the dragons. Why? I noticed that there are 2 long obstacles on the battlefield, between which is a narrow gap where the Titans line up before the battle (thanks to expert tactics!): see the 1st screenshot.
And then – the fun begins! The dragons can reach the Titans, but only from 2 opposite hexes, and attacking from 2 sides is not "convenient" for them, so they don't roast each other! Therefore, they attacked one stack per round. I first cast Prayer, Shield, Blessing, and Fire Shield on the Titans, and then in each round, I only resurrected the fallen. The ending is a bit predictable (see the 2nd screenshot). :)
So, sometimes Titans really do rule! ;)
