Unfortunately, it's not possible! If you want to see the "old" portrait, play the "old" version of "Heroes"!
In Heroes of Might and Magic, you can change portraits if you know how.

download the MMarchiver program
open the h3bitmap.lod resource file from one version, find the corresponding portrait files there, such as hpsXXXX.pcx and hplXXXX.pcx, where xxx is the hero's number (find the correct number by browsing)
and save them somewhere.
Then, open the same resource file but from a different version, and put these portraits from the disk into it, and then click the "compile" button or whatever it's called, basically apply the replacement, and then try it in the game.
If it doesn't work, try the same operation again, you can even delete, compile, add, and compile.

You need to find a program to unpack LOD archives, unpack this archive H3bitmap.lod (in the Data folder), move the file with the portrait of the desired hero to the Data folder in the Complete Collection.
