Among the neutral creatures, I like the Azure and Crystal Dragons. They are simply beautiful. Also, the Diamond Golems are pretty good.

Wizards and snipers are also good.

It's a pity that in Heroes, there are only two heroes who can upgrade basic units into these beauties.

Yes, peasants in Heroes are more like a mandatory unit than a combat unit.

I also think that in Heroes 4 and 5, they developed the theme of crosses (+1 coin for 1 cross) very well. I think such an individual ability wouldn't hurt, and they wouldn't be valued as just cannon fodder... they would at least be a little appreciated.
