I have several problems at once... I'll start in order.
Windows XP, ADSL connection via a D-Link modem. Internet speed is 256 kbps. Latest version of Heroes, HotA, SoD with patched executable, complete Russian collection...

When launching the game, it says that at least 5MB of free space is required on the disk and then it crashes. There is more than 20GB of free space on the disk. What is the problem?

HoMM3 HD - the mod does not affect either the installation of your game (all your files in the Heroes folder remain intact), or internet connection settings; only the game interface is changed. All problems stem from the basic game installation and operating system (network settings, as a rule).
Some information about the problem can be found in useful links. You need to install version Heroes 3.2 first, and then the mod.
And don't do that :)
The described problems are presented somewhat chaotically and vaguely, and they can be discussed with one of the players via ICQ if the available published information is insufficient.
p.s. Regarding difficulties with connecting/transferring data in Gameranger, it was discovered that when updating the antivirus software, its core (system functions) may also have been updated (virtually all antiviruses today incorporate firewall functions; and vice versa). Therefore, you should roll back the updates or check the antivirus functions.

After installing the HD mod and performing some manipulations, possibly incorrect ones, the game stopped launching in fullscreen mode.

When I installed it the first time, there was an option to change the resolution, which I did, and it changed and now looks like this.

The maximum possible resolution was 1024*768, even if I set a higher resolution in the mod settings.

I decided to revert to the previous resolution, but after further changes, the game no longer launched in fullscreen mode. The resolution did change, but it was smaller than the entire screen. The game image was simply scaled up or down relative to the screen on a black background.

So, it only runs in windowed mode? And what happens when you press F4?

And what is it like now? How was it before?

So, even if you set 1280x800 (the physical resolution of your screen), the game still runs at 1024x768? If this is really the case, it's the most unbelievable thing you've described.

So, when you set, say, 800x600 (aspect ratio: 4:3) or 1024x768 (4:3),
the resolution is set while maintaining the aspect ratio, but you want it to be stretched to 8:5? Well, many modern monitors and graphics cards allow you to adjust how a resolution that doesn't match the monitor's aspect ratio is displayed. And if your 800x600 resolution used to be stretched to fill the screen, but now it's displayed with black bars, it's obvious that your laptop has this functionality. So, instead of uselessly reinstalling the game and the HD mod, you should look into the display settings on your laptop (either a special proprietary utility or just the graphics card settings).
As a last resort, you can try reinstalling the video drivers.

In general, there's no need to panic, and the HD mod isn't the problem. The HD mod simply sends a command to DirectX to set a specific resolution (from the system's supported resolutions), and then it's completely unrelated to the HD mod how DirectX handles this command, how it passes it to the graphics card, and how the graphics card ultimately reacts to it.
