Posts from Don’t you feel sorry for the units that die on the battlefield?
Most often, it's a pity... I probably get too immersed in the role of a commander. And although I realize that a set of pixels doesn't have a wife, children, or plans for the future, it's still very sad to be an accomplice in the death of my own soldiers. If I'm playing against the AI, I try to minimize losses as much as possible, ideally to zero. But when playing against another person, I don't have time for sentimentality – my mental efforts are focused on achieving victory at any cost, not on anything else. And any loss of troops, even the total death of a defeated army, is simply perceived as a piece removed from the board. Let them die, as long as they fulfill their combat mission! Victory justifies everything.

Oh, I felt so sorry for the Medusas and the creatures from the fourth game. I almost wanted to cry when they made those sad "dying" sounds before their demise... And in the fifth game, I felt sorry for the Shamanesses – they died in a very "human" way...
I feel sorry for most of the creatures, though. For example, take angels or archangels. They die so beautifully... And I also feel very sorry for the dancing creatures of death in the Sylvan faction. It almost brings a tear to my eye...
It's sad to watch when they take out your level 2 units... you always carefully accumulate them at the beginning, and then bam - 5 Gogs or 7 Archers take them down... jerks. But in general, it's always sad when archers are defeated, regardless of their level. I feel the least sorry for the highest-level units - that's why they have the best stats, so they can deal damage and take hits in return.
It's a pity about the key units, especially when they're your own; perhaps that's because I prefer "evil" factions, like Demons and Dungeon (Heroes of Might and Magic V) or Dungeon and Necropolis (Heroes of Might and Magic II, WOG).
Sometimes I feel sorry for the girls from Dungeon and Stronghold. Even if they are on the other side of the barricade. Usually, when I attack some "hero-less" squad, I eliminate everyone, even if they are running away, but I try not to touch the girls. I gather a stronger squad so that they get scared and run away from the battlefield.
The same goes for human units from Haven. They are people after all. The exception is monk-inquisitors-adepts and zealots; I always eliminate them completely.
And I try to minimize losses in my ranks on the battlefield.
I guess I'm the only sadist here. I read and thought about it for a long time... I feel sorry when both you and your opponent have only one unit left, and you have one last turn to defeat them, but they go first and you lose, even though you were so close to winning... But when you win, the joy of victory is five times greater! I also feel bad when you somehow manage to get a neutral unit in your army that can't be recruited anywhere else, and then it gets killed... But in all other cases, I don't feel sorry at all...
I feel sorry for the Sylvan, especially the fairies. What did they do wrong? But I feel the least sorry for the dwarves, especially when they are gleefully laughing their annoying laugh.
