La Roux is an English electropop duo founded by singer and musician Eleanor Jackson, also known as Ellie, together with co-writer and producer Ben Langmaid. The members of this formation agree that their partnership is more of a solo project for Ellie, supported by Langmaid, than a true duo. Eleanor Jackson was born into the family of actress Trudie Goodwin, who became famous after appearing in the series The Bill. Langmaid is a veteran of the British scene. In the 90s, he worked diligently with electronic music and at one time collaborated with Faithless member Rollo Armstrong. Upon hearing the melodies that Ellie wrote and performed, he decided to abandon all his projects and dedicate himself to working in the duo with Jackson. Once, Ellie found a book of baby names where she encountered the French name La Roux, which means a person with red hair. From then on, she realized there could be no better name for their group. When they started, the musicians focused on acoustic music and primarily wrote ballads. However, a wealth of experimentation led them to electronic dance music, which was created and developed by stars such as Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, and The Human League.

In 2008, the duo holed up in the studio, and in November, with the support of the small French label Kitsune Music, they released their debut single Quicksand.
