I can't say anything about WT, as I haven't been there in a while. As for TE, it's adapted for online duels. It has many new features, and there's a lot of help available if you're interested – not all of which were accepted by the Heroes community. As a result, TE Lite appeared, which is essentially a rollback to The Shadow of Death, and combines the TE interface while resembling a more standard version of The Shadow of Death. You can find a link to the TE patch and instructions on how to install it in my signature. Without claiming to establish a "definitive diagnosis," I would like to simply rehabilitate the positions of Necropolis units.
The framework of comparative unit analysis does not always adequately reflect real gameplay processes. Without touching upon such an important parameter as tactical skill (for example, the absence of archers may somewhat demoralize a beginner, while a master manipulates Shakti no worse than Valeska), I would like to remind you that the strength of a STACK (army) depends not only on the qualitative characteristics of the units within it, but also on their quantity. Of course, 28 pikemen are stronger than 28 skeletons. But 28 pikemen are generally noticeably weaker than 128 skeletons!
The strength of Necropolis STACKS lies in the ability to obtain a free (by the way) super-stack, which often exceeds 2, or even 3, stacks of the opponent. Such super-stacks are called "shock stacks" by masters. As a result, the difference in the strength of STACKS (not units 1 on 1) allows the Necropolis to be considered one of the strongest castles.
As for other Necropolis units, I would like to note the 6th level troops (Black Knights - Death Knights). Those interested can search for the numerous studies currently available; I will only give a general conclusion. Among the 6th level units, the Necropolis is at least not inferior to the Tower (Nagas) and, apparently, surpasses all the others.

The disc is valuable from an antique perspective – it's hard to find one these days; they are practically not available for sale.

In principle, people often install "Blade of the Dragon" and then add "The Shadow of Death" on top (which immediately includes a map generator). However, essentially, this isn't possible. Only "The Shadow of Death" can be installed directly.
