My friend has a laptop with Vista Home Basic. Therefore, he cannot increase the priority of Hamachi because there is simply no "advanced" option.

disable the firewall on both computers. Also, if you're setting up Hamachi on Windows XP, it automatically sets the priority, but some other programs might change it – I don't understand this.
If you're playing through a router, enable DMZ, and disable the firewalls there as well; this applies to the DSL modem too. It's also a good idea to disable antivirus software.

Practice shows that ping in Hamachi is not a mandatory condition for connection. Disable firewalls and antivirus software and try again. Firewalls can be in routers and DSL modems, so pay attention to them.
