Another set of quite interesting characters are Garret (but not a thief, rather a detective) and Morti Dots (a dark elf assassin, vegetarian, seducer, and Garret's friend) from Glen Cook's books about Garret's adventures.

I was thinking about it recently and remembered another character who deserves the title of "Hero of our time." Some might disagree, saying that it's not fantasy and that our world already has firearms, but they would be wrong. Judge for yourselves – living dead, an Indian curse, voodoo magic, a kraken, the legendary ghost ship "Flying Dutchman" and its crew of half-fish, journeys to the ends of the earth and back, the goddess Callisto, and, as a grand finale, the search for the Fountain of Youth. Isn't that fantasy?
And who hasn't figured out that I'm talking about the most charismatic pirate of all time, Jack Sparrow – the unforgettable captain of the "Black Pearl"? Volkodav is, of course, a great guy, but this talkative scoundrel easily pushes him into second place with his charisma.

Okay. There are... 2 contenders. 1) Sky Falcor (the "Dictator" book series, I already gave the link to Drakia) – a dragon who ended up in a world similar to Krynn, having come from the prosperous Drakia, which knows neither wars nor dragon hunts... and managed to preserve himself. The first (and only, besides Dusk on that planet) Dictator (intelligent, with the power to change probabilities). The first Emperor of Drakia. I like him... for his humanity (although the word doesn't quite fit...). 2) Terry Pratchett's heroes (specifically – Rincewind (!!!) and Death (!!! !!! !!!)). No further comments needed. Oh, and there's also a pile of relatively minor characters – Geralt from Arzamas-16 ("The Witcher of Greater Kyiv"), both Garretts (the thief and the detective), Juffin Halli ("Labyrinths of Echo").
