The warm May days were in full swing; the pleasant summer sun and a light northern breeze cheerfully called everyone outside, yet instead a human mass with buzzing brains was forced to hunch over desks in a stuffy classroom, rustling paper parchments, sneezing and coughing, raising mountains of gray dust into the stale air. The concept of tedious and useless exams before the best season of the year could still be endured, but the students of the royal academy were not awaiting any well-earned summer vacation, or any rest at all. The long-awaited reward for all their labors and hardships would be an agonizing wait for results that would divide half the stipend and experience among the three best students, while the rest, already lagging behind, would completely lose their chance to catch up with their peers. Such economic inequality was undoubtedly attractive as long as you were able to remain at the top of this hastily built academic pyramid, but this month egalitarian moods prevailed in Nira’s thoughts. In neither money nor connections did she surpass most students here, and there was no trump card or trick that could now be used to her advantage. One option was to rely on luck, which until now had favored her bright person, but after the recent tournament it had become perfectly clear that she had somehow lost even that advantage.
Taking her eyes off the blank answer sheet, the girl briefly looked around the hall. Just a couple of months ago she would have laughed at all this mouse-like fuss, but the nasty old man and the royal granddaughter had somehow managed to infect her with a competitive spirit: a desire not to fall behind even in those disciplines that had meant nothing to her past self. What was this silly tournament or foolish history test to her? What use would it bring in her future life? What was she spending her time, nerves, and health on? What was this talentless competition into which she was subconsciously dragging herself? Truly, all one has to do is mix people into a single mass, give them any idea and goal, no matter how stupid or naive, and the herd can be steered however one likes. There will be no individuality, no personality, no desires and motives of one’s own, but there will be little tournaments and exams; and what then? Determining whose hair color is prettier, whose belief is more correct, whose little king on the throne is stronger?
Glancing at the test questions, Nira could not hold back a slight smile. So that is it. 💡

Question 1: describe your thoughts on the course you have completed. Examples of suitable topics for reflection:
- an assessment of the geopolitical situation in Lafrenia and its future in the coming years.

Before arriving at the academy, I had hardly been interested in politics, so my knowledge of the world around us was modest at the very least. 😞 Sometimes I came across brief mentions of ongoing conflicts, such as “beauty contest in such-and-such country canceled due to border clashes with terrorists from such-and-such place,” or “famous fashion designer will not come because relations between countries have become more complicated,” and so on. But such things seemed to me distant and unreal, as if from another world.
However, after the very first history lecture, when the current map of political relations appeared before my eyes, I could neither believe nor comprehend how bad the situation on our continent truly is. 😟 Just think, even we ourselves do not have a single worthwhile ally on the world stage! At first I assumed that the bad morals and customs of other countries and their residents were to blame (forgive me, professor! 😇  ), because otherwise the picture of the world simply would not come together. Many of the lectures of recent months confirmed my suspicions in a certain way: after all, if mostly barbarians and villains live around us, this circle of mutual hatred is easy to explain. For the same reason, I had certain worries about foreign students arriving within the walls of our academy: in the current difficult situation, how could we coexist amicably and avoid ideological, cultural, and political conflicts? 😕
However, as it seems to me now, I made a small inaccuracy in my initial judgments, though I am still not completely certain of this. Therefore, in this essay I would like to try to find not specific ways to solve obvious geopolitical problems, but first and foremost to identify their main source, without which further “treatment” will produce only temporary effects.
And the reason for the doubts that arose in me is quite simple: as it happened, in our class I met a girl named Varya from Refithea. 😊 This meeting made me look at that country from a somewhat different angle. One can say many things about their political deeds and customs, but what if we look at things in particular? Varya is a very bright and friendly person who has never done anyone harm in her life. And in our library I unwittingly became absorbed in the works of the Refithean author Velikrasov, and it seems to me that I drew more life experience from them than from the entire previous month of training. 😂 And my father, for example, seriously collects Refithean proverbs and sayings, which is probably cute and amusing in its own way.
Only one conclusion suggests itself from all this. Neither Varya, nor Velikrasov, nor Father’s best friend who helped us move are bad people by nature. I think the same could be said of the residents of any other country in the world. Moreover, their culture, customs (and fashion) can be interesting and attractive in their own way, at least for voluntary acquaintance. But if the problem is not evil people, and not even a hostile culture, then why can we not get along in peace? 🤔
Here one could make the logical assumption that the essence of the problem lies in differences of religious belief. And indeed, unfortunately I do not know very much about them, except that they constantly compete with one another... But from what I have heard, I cannot find a single current that has conceptually evil and aggressive roots, even the goddess of war or whatever her name is. If one digs a little deeper, all these beliefs primarily try to unite people with similar views on life: to unite them for the sake of protection and survival, not attack. The seeds of enmity, as a rule, arise from highlighting certain vague interpretations in their dogmas, which are then actively used as a reason to plant conflict on the ground of conviction. Religion itself does not speak and does not command; someone else is doing all that...
And now, while sitting at this test, I thought: what if at this very minute, in some other country, there is an identical history exam where other students are colorfully describing the barbarians and scoundrels of Sakuramoria? 😥 Finding a reason to hate another state is very easy, especially if one mixes its people, culture, and beliefs into a single mash, erases the boundaries of individuality, and merges all judgments together. But what does that mean? If the issue lies neither in people, nor culture, nor even beliefs, what can be the true cause of the current tense world situation? What real root of evil hides behind the above-mentioned particulars, deliberately merging them into one in order to secretly satisfy its own ideological needs?
If the students who come to us create conflicts or forcibly impose a culture hostile to us, it will in essence not be their fault. The true culprit is the one who all this time has deliberately sought out the darkest differences between us, the most deceitful corners of the human soul, in order to use them as a pretext for political games. 😈 A physically and mentally healthy person will never be the first to show baseless aggression. And if it is extremely difficult to persuade or instill false ideals into such a person individually, once they are united into a crowd, all of it becomes very easy. That is simply how you and I were created.
Summing up my conclusion, I believe that the true root of the problem lies in the institution of statehood, namely in the overall structure of power humanity has chosen. You may, of course, argue with me by saying that it is in our nature to seek differences and similarities in order to divide one another into “us” and “them,” but it is the state that plays the most serious role here, actively supporting the trends it needs and cruelly destroying unfavorable ones. This one has dark skin, so he is a friend; that one has horns on his head, so he is an enemy. In other words, instead of honestly evaluating the fashionable outfits of the latest season, we get a kind of corrupt jury that favors those who have paid and deliberately buries the rest.
One might accidentally suppose here that the main problem lies specifically in monarchies, which, as is known, govern most countries of Lafrenia, but no, I do not think they are to blame at all. After all, if one assesses the alternatives, such as Ditlind, the situation does not look much better. 🙁 One could abolish the structure of the state altogether, as in that same Lethargia, but as history shows, this system does not work in large settlements, and in small ones it quickly slides into banditry and robbery. It does not matter whether it is one monarch, a tsar, a group of ministers, or a village elder: the essence remains the same.
Unfortunately, I do not have enough brains I cannot give an unambiguous answer as to how it would be possible to solve the problem I have identified on a global level. I think we could leave the state as such the right to conduct domestic policy, which its own people feel most vividly and which, if necessary, they themselves must regulate by any legally available (or not) methods. As for external political relations, it would be ideal somehow to abandon them altogether. Perhaps unite everyone under a common system with shared resources and territory, starting economic opportunities, and rights? So that there would be no neighbor with whom one could compete? But that, of course, is absolutely impossible, beyond even the gods. For whoever considers himself the loser will always consider himself humiliated and seek freedom, while the winner will lose himself in pride and quickly betray the original principles.
As for the role of our country in all this, I love Sakuramoria very much, but unfortunately I do not think that even if we held half the power of the continent in our hands, we could change the concept of the ugly system of coexistence created by people. Suppose we stop every single conflict; how long would that last? As history has shown, people cannot survive without creating a state community, and the institution of power cannot survive without external conflicts, which in turn create a new need for the state.
Our achievable maximum for the coming decades is to improve relations with our neighbors (I do not know how) and perhaps try to create a single economic and political system whose countries would be united by mutually beneficial commodity and business relations while still preserving cultural and political borders. It could be called the “Lafreunion” or something like that, hee-hee. 😇

And in general, I think our imperfection in matters of self-government will haunt us throughout all history, and nothing will ever change that, no matter how many students we send to one another.

Before answering questions 2-5, I will briefly describe my impression of our neighbors and other countries of Lafrenia, so I will not need to justify one choice or another for too long. 😇 This, of course, will not be too fair given my opinion in the previous section, but in the world as it stands one has to accept the already existing rules of the game, while ideological reflections can remain on paper. As they say, theory is one thing, and harsh reality quite another.
