FAQ
What is VCMI?
VCMI is a full remake of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It is a new engine built from scratch that uses the graphics, sound, and text resources of the original game. Thanks to this, VCMI provides almost perfect compatibility with the classic Heroes 3 gameplay, while offering the technical advantages of a modern engine.
Everything in VCMI has been rewritten from scratch, including game file loading, graphics rendering, artificial intelligence, and core mechanics. The project's goal is not only to integrate popular features from community-favorite mods such as HotA, WoG, and HD Mod, but also to explore new possibilities in all aspects of gameplay.
What does "VCMI" mean?
VCMI is an acronym for the Quenya phrase "Vinyar Callor Meletyo ar Ingoleo," which means "New Heroes of Might and Magic."
What is the goal of VCMI? Why play or develop it if Heroes 3 already exists?
The developers' goal is to create the "best" version of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 that overcomes various limitations of the H3 engine and provides much easier extensibility and modding compared to the original game. Additionally, VCMI is a cross-platform project and runs on different systems, including Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android.
Is HotA / WoG compatible with VCMI?
Unlike HotA and WoG, which are mods for the original Heroes of Might and Magic 3, VCMI is a full remake. Some enthusiasts have ported parts of these mods to VCMI to offer a limited set of their features; however, future VCMI updates will allow them to be implemented more fully.
For example, the planned VCMI scripting system, not specifically intended for WoG, will eventually replace the scripting functionality present in WoG.
Is HD Mod compatible with VCMI?
HD Mod is not compatible with VCMI; however, VCMI offers its own high-resolution settings and interface improvements that enhance the gaming experience. These features include analogues of most popular HD Mod features, and future project updates will add even more improvements.
On which platforms is VCMI available?
Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and others.
Where can I download the latest version?
We recommend downloading the latest version from the https://vcmi.eu/download/ page, installing it into a new folder, and then running the VCMI Launcher, which will help with further setup.
Additional installation instructions for your system are also available below the download links. Android users are recommended to install VCMI from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=is.xyz.vcmi.
Who works on the project?
The project is worked on by volunteers in their free time. VCMI is a non-commercial project. Unlike most other projects related to Heroes 3, VCMI is an open-source project, meaning its source code is open, and anyone can contribute.
This also means that the project's future does not depend on whether team members leave or decide not to publish the source code.
Can I donate money?
No, at the moment we do not accept donations, as we do not have a good idea of how to use them.
Where should I report bugs?
Report bugs on GitHub. Developers strongly recommend using English.
How can I contact the developers?
We recommend using our Discord server or forums. If you are not comfortable communicating in English, the developers' social platforms also have channels for different languages.
I like VCMI. How can I help make it better?
You can join our Discord server. We need C++ developers and QA/testers. There are also other areas where we could use help, such as graphic design and community or content management.
Additionally, you can create mods with additional content to increase VCMI's popularity.
How close is VCMI to reproducing Heroes of Might and Magic 3?
Almost all features of the original game should already be implemented. If something does not work, report it to the developers' bug tracker.
When will the final version of VCMI / 2.0 / any other version be released?
Open-source projects never stop evolving and often move in different directions over time. As long as contributors are interested in adding new features, VCMI will continue to develop. There is no point in waiting for a "final" version.
It is difficult to estimate major milestones like "100% compatibility with the original H3," since work on VCMI is distributed between fixing bugs, adding missing features, developing AI, creating new features that do not exist in Heroes 3, and other tasks.
The developers are not very close to eliminating every bug and implementing absolutely all missing features, but if VCMI were only about that, we would probably have achieved this goal long ago.
The extensibility of the VCMI engine requires doing various things "better" than the original Heroes 3 developers did, rather than just in the easiest way. Our engine is built with extensibility in mind, and various mechanics, such as creature abilities, are not hardcoded but are available for modding.
Long-term goals, such as improved multiplayer, make VCMI development more complex in the short term.
When will feature X be released?
If the feature you are waiting for is on the task list, you can vote for it. If it is not there, report it so the developers know about such a need.
Everyone has different expectations and priorities. We also have our own views on what should be more prioritized and what should not, based on various factors, including the current state of the project.
The developers do not have a page like "what is currently being worked on," because such pages quickly become outdated.
Can town X be added to VCMI?
This depends on the town's authors or someone else who wants to port it to VCMI. VCMI aims to provide support for new towns.
Can I play online in multiplayer?
VCMI multiplayer reached a stable state in version 1.5 and offers features such as simultaneous turns and turn timers, providing a comfortable online gaming experience.
You can join the global lobby available in-game via "New Game → Multiplayer → Online Service" to battle players from around the world. You can also gather friends and play over a local network on any supported device.
Multiplayer development remains one of the top priorities, so further improvements are expected in the future.
How accurately does VCMI emulate H3 gameplay?
VCMI strives to reproduce the mechanics of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 as accurately as possible, fixing some known bugs and making some features optional. However, the artificial intelligence is completely new and differs significantly from the original.
What AI customization options are there?
The standard AI for adventure maps in VCMI is Nullkiller AI. It provides a challenging strategic opponent, but may run slower on weak devices, also depending on map size.
If you are looking for an even more serious challenge, try the Boost AI or Extreme AI mods, which offer increased AI difficulty options.
