Nortia Since its liberation from the northern invaders in the year 572, Nortia existed as a prosperous and relatively free kingdom under the rule of the benevolent and beloved Regeldorf dynasty, which had been instrumental in forming the Nortian kingdom with the blessing of the Church of Arteria in the year 106. Nortia's only neighbors — the Kingdom of Serberia and the Republic of Shengkai, located to its south — were significantly more powerful than the northern country, but did not dare to launch military aggression against it due to their unwillingness to enter into open conflict with each other. However, Nortia's political system at the time was not protected from the influence of these two behemoths of the international arena. For a long period, both countries tried to "convince" Nortia to come under their patronage by using mercenaries and various political groups in a proxy war against each other on its territory, but these attempts remained unsuccessful. Ultimately, Nortia's weak point turned out to be its internal market, which by the year 729 had become dependent on Shengkai. In November of that same year, while Reginleiv and his allies were occupied with war first against Lisliar and then against the cultists of Arteria, a fire broke out at a factory owned by one of Shengkai's enterprises. The cause was never determined, but it was enough for the republic to use the situation to its advantage: at a trade conference held the following month, its government ruled that Nortia was unable to protect the republic's enterprises and citizens, and proposed deploying its own troops to maintain order within Nortia. The expected refusal followed as a response to this proposal, leading Shengkai to suspend trade relations with the northern kingdom indefinitely. This was followed by an economic crisis; agents and supporters of Shengkai and Serberia in Nortia's government resumed their activities, and soon a civil war broke out in Nortia between three factions — the Democratic Party of Nortia (supporters of Shengkai), the Traditionalists (supporters of Serberia), and the People's Party of Nortia. The latter blamed the royal dynasty, the political elite, and the southern enemies for the country's troubles, which proved to be a simple message for the angry masses and more appealing than the idea of coming under the protection of one of the southern powers, advocated by the other two factions. As a result, by the end of 731, the initiative passed to the PPN and, by a stroke of luck, Serberia was now engulfed in the flames of its own internecine war, while a serious political crisis began in Shengkai that promised to drag on for years. Thus, they could no longer support their supporters in Nortia. By 733, the forces of the Democratic Party of Nortia and the Traditionalists were defeated, and their leadership executed. In the summer of that same year, members of the royal family, including Queen Anastasia Regeldorf, were publicly executed by hanging, and the new head of the country became Eric Pinkerton (48), leader of the PPN, soon proclaimed Supreme Commander of Nortia. After the end of the civil war, the rule of Eric and the PPN was accompanied by mass repressions and the adoption of a number of controversial laws. For example, economic changes began with the nationalization of all sectors of the economy and ended with Nortia's abandonment of the concept of money as such in favor of the so-called "card system," under which certain norms for the use of services and consumption of goods were established for each citizen of the country. The incompetence of the country's new leadership, combined with the results of the prolonged war and the preceding economic crisis, led to a famine that lasted five years. Despite this, the PPN regime, distinguished by its ruthlessness, managed to retain power and even strengthen the country's defensive capabilities. Over the following years, Nortian citizens' personal rights grew fewer and their various troubles increased, but miraculously and contrary to this, the northern country managed to become fully autonomous and mount a worthy resistance to Shengkai when the republic solved its internal problems and declared war on Nortia, a war that continues to this day. In 764, Carl Pinkerton (51), son of the previous ruler, becomes the new Supreme Commander of Nortia. Throughout his reign, he does not introduce any significant changes, but merely strengthens the regime established by his predecessor. Modern Nortia The successor to the previous leader of Nortia was supposed to be his only son Frank, but he died from alcohol poisoning (officially it was stated that he died during defensive actions against Shengkai), so the third Supreme Commander of Nortia became Carl's granddaughter — Ilse, who had previously studied in Nyehing. Unlike her predecessors, Ilse Pinkerton is trying to set a completely different course for Nortia, but despite her high position in the hierarchy of the Nortian government, this is not easy due to pressure from other influential members of the PPN, which is further complicated by the existence of Governor-Generals responsible for leading the country's large regions. The prolonged war with Shengkai also does not allow for reducing military spending and focusing on solving other problems. To date, Ilse Pinkerton has managed with great difficulty to return Nortia to the use of currency and make certain concessions for citizens, but overall the situation in the country for the common population has not changed much. Main Regions of Nortia Capital — Scherzo Both before the overthrow of the royal dynasty and after, Scherzo was and remains the cultural center of Nortia. Here lies the Snow Palace, which in the past served as a home for the Regeldorf dynasty and now is the official residence of the Supreme Leader of Nortia and the workplace of the central government. Scherzo concentrates the greatest share of the country's wealth and PPN members. It is the only one of the country's large regions not having its own Governor-General, as it is governed directly by the Supreme Leader. Astrid Most of Nortia's military personnel, equipment, supplies, and ammunition are concentrated in the southeast of the country — in the Astrid region, which borders Shengkai. This region serves as a buffer zone between the rest of Nortia and its adversary in the war, but apart from this, it supplies nothing to other regions and actively drains all kinds of resources from them. The Governor-General of Astrid, Cordelia Solfeggio, managed to achieve her current position due to the fact that in the southeast of the country, competence in waging war carries more weight than personal connections. After being appointed to the position of Governor-General, however, she became suspected of serious abuse of official authority, but due to the current situation at the front and the large number of soldiers loyal to her, it is currently difficult for other PPN members to take any measures against her. One such attempt took place in 776 when she was ordered to volunteer for participation in the "Crimson Snow" experiment, the purpose of which was to create an artificial valkyrie using Serberian technology. About ten thousand young Nortian women took part in the project, and to spite her opponents, only Cordelia survived. Subsequently, the Governor-General of Astrid received the nickname "Iron Valkyrie." Vidar The southwestern region of Nortia, located on the border with Serberia. The warmest of Nortia's regions and the source of most of its food supplies. During the reign of Carl Pinkerton, Vidar became the largest producer of buckwheat and potatoes on the continent. The Governor-General of Vidar is Oscar Lind. A fair and diligent leader in his work, but a person lacking flexibility in his views, which is why, like other PPN members, he opposes Ilse Pinkerton's changes. In the past, an active participant in combat operations against Shengkai. Saturnalia The northeastern region of Nortia, the industrial center of the country where a large share of raw materials is also extracted. The bulk of military equipment and weapons are produced here, and the presence of a large quartz deposit allows this region to meet all of the country's energy needs. The Governor-General of Saturnalia is Ilmari Laine, head of the Internal Affairs Commissariat of Nortia and one of the opponents of Ilse Pinkerton's changes, who gained enormous influence during the reign of her predecessor. Serberia After the Artherian Schism and the onset of a devastating war in southern Vistoria, it became clear to many experts of the time that, regardless of how events unfolded, Reginleif would lose its colossal influence on the international stage and, should the Airisufir Empire fail to resolve its internal problems, would leave the western part of the continent in the hands of the Serberian Kingdom and the Shengkai Republic, the economic and military giants of the era. Seizing upon this pretext, the Shengkai government sent its envoy, Zhuge Liang, on a secret visit to Heinrich der Grosse, King of Serberia. The ensuing negotiations discussed the idea of dividing Vistoria into spheres of influence between the two states, but no agreement satisfying both sides was reached, forcing the Shengkai envoy to return home empty-handed. A week later, however, Heinrich der Grosse died under mysterious circumstances, leaving the kingdom, unprepared for the sudden change of monarch, in a state of complete chaos. Heinrich’s successor was to be Leopold der Grosse, his eldest son. In his ideals and aspirations, Leopold largely resembled his father and planned to continue the course he had set for governing the kingdom. However, unlike his predecessor, the heir to the throne lacked the same cold-bloodedness and cunning, and was moreover too noble and insufficiently ruthless toward his enemies. Where Heinrich nipped any opposition in the bud, Leopold gave his opponents a chance to voice their opinions, hoping to find a compromise beneficial to the entire nation. He was an excellent orator and could defend his position in any debate, whether in public view or behind the closed doors of the royal council, but this did not save him from rumors and sabotage. Ultimately, influential figures at the head of anti-monarchist factions accused Leopold of poisoning Heinrich and refused to recognize him as their king. Soon thereafter, Serberia split into three conditional parts: - Loyalists recognized Leopold der Grosse as their king and defended the traditional order of the country's political and social life. - Influential aristocrats sought to reduce royal powers and expand regional autonomy. Their candidate for the throne was Konrad der Grosse, the youngest of Heinrich’s children, too young for his opinion to carry any weight. - Revolutionaries, led by Katarina der Grosse and with financial support from Shengkai, advocated for the abolition of slavery and the elimination of the aristocratic system in the country. A few months after the start of hostilities, the conflict reached a stalemate — none of the three factions could achieve the necessary conditions to defeat their opponents, but since none of the leaders was willing to compromise with each other, no end to the war was in sight. The situation changed only a year later, when a new side entered the conflict, led by Albert der Grosse, a son of the previous king who had been disinherited and exiled from Serberia. At first, no one took the Fool of Messenzetz seriously, but over time, the number of his supporters grew significantly. Some were charmed by his charisma, others by his competence and genuine interest in his subjects, and still others were simply tired of the prolonged conflict and saw in him the key to solving the problem strangling the kingdom. Albert's soldiers, led by himself and his faithful companion Sophia von Mainz, stood out for their higher morale and tactical superiority over their opponents, allowing them to overcome numerically superior enemy forces. Albert’s officer corps included both commoners and aristocrats, and where other factions executed defeated enemy commanders for treason, Albert gave them a second chance, earning him a reputation as a merciful leader, as well as a large number of competent officers in his army. The turning point in the war came after Leopold's death under unclear circumstances — after this, the loyalists joined Albert’s faction, less out of love for him than out of hatred for the other two factions. Peace After the end of the civil war and the subsequent brief conflict with the Alliance of the Counties of Royenthal, Albert der Grosse was crowned in the Messenzetz Palace in the presence of his loyal subjects and former opponents, and at the same time exchanged marriage vows with Sophia von Mainz. Unlike his predecessors, Albert was not interested in conquering other countries and peoples, and devoted all his attention to restoring the kingdom from the consequences of the bloody internecine strife. Nevertheless, the changes enacted by Albert's government were not radical and left many participants in the hostilities dissatisfied, but at this stage they had no choice but to accept this state of affairs; moreover, by a strange coincidence, many representatives of the opposition disappeared from the country's political life. Albert abolished slavery and eliminated the privileges of noble families, thus equalizing all citizens of the kingdom before the law, but at the same time left the aristocracy with all their titles, wealth, and lands that they had before the start of the civil war. In his view, there was no place for class inequality in the new Serberia, but he recognized the kingdom's entrenched traditions as an integral part of Serberian culture, and the redistribution of wealth advocated by the former supporters of his sister Katarina as absurd. New Era Despite a very difficult post-war start, the new government of the kingdom managed to achieve great success in the areas of economy and education, as a result of which, in just twenty years of social stability, the standard of living for the common population in Serberia increased many times over and became a source of national pride. This success is largely explained by the Serberian work ethic, which was incorporated into compulsory education and became an integral part of the country's culture, alongside the veneration of the military craft — despite the fact that King Albert chose a policy of non-interference in the affairs of other countries, he nevertheless continued to insist on the importance of martial arts as a necessary activity for maintaining the health of body, spirit, and mind. In Serberia, there are many schools dedicated to various martial arts, many of which have their branches within the walls of the kingdom's numerous academies. Although deadly fights have been abolished, the arenas of Serberia continue to thrive to this day, and it is the tournaments among young students that attract the most public attention. Along with this, the kingdom continues to revere art in all its forms, only now not only representatives of aristocratic families but also all other citizens are drawn to it. The presence of museums, theaters, and art studios is a mandatory requirement for any city in Serberia. Origin On the territory of Vistoria, Serberians are known as hardworking, organized, and pleasant people to interact with, having no weaknesses and capable of achieving results in any endeavor. The inhabitants of the kingdom are not particularly religious, but their national spirit and trust in the crown are extremely high. Notably, there is a suspicious attitude among Serberians toward magical sciences and those who practice them, as within the kingdom itself they are banned due to the fact that, as history has shown, in the wrong hands magic can be too dangerous and difficult to control. And while it cannot be said that this is far from the truth, in reality the stable political life of the kingdom owes much to the secret police, the existence of which even the king himself was unaware of for a long time. The activities of this organization can be traced back to the civil war: initially, it was responsible for protecting Albert der Grosse and eliminating his political opponents, but over time its influence gradually strengthened. The secret police engaged in eliminating dissidents, blackmailing important political figures and representatives of big business, both within the kingdom and beyond its borders, dabbled in trade on Vistoria's black markets, conducted intelligence and counterintelligence, carried out various experiments, and even eliminated those women who showed signs of attention toward the king. The head of the secret police was and remains Sophia der Grosse; she was also the curator and primary test subject of the "Valkyrie" project, which lasted for several decades — using the developments of the "Workshop," Serberian scientists gradually modified the body of the reigning queen until she became Vistoria's first artificial valkyrie. In the future, these technologies would be transferred to the PPN in exchange for access to the resource-rich north of Nortia. When King Albert learned of the existence of the secret police and its role in his path as monarch, he fell into a coma, in which he remains to this day, and as the queen is too busy caring for him and not particularly interested in the life of the country, power is currently concentrated in the hands of influential representatives of Serberia's armed forces. |
It is worth noting the suspicious attitude of the Serberians towards magical sciences and those who practice them, as they are prohibited within the kingdom itself, due to the fact that, as history has shown, magic in the wrong hands can be too dangerous and difficult to control.
