For me, the absence of aliens, "abilities," and pseudo-technological stuff was actually a plus, because the focus was directly on the plot and world-building, rather than on secondary elements of the setting that could easily turn out to be tasteless, depending on the implementation. I also watched it for quite a long time, like four months or so. However, not because I was bored, but simply because I wanted to prolong the enjoyment. War and Peace, by the way, was something I enjoyed at the time. But now, I certainly wouldn't read something like that, the setting is just awful. It's just as depressing as Westeros, only without dragons, magic, and a queen who's always getting it on.

I actually guessed. My grandmother used to tell me that it was an incredibly interesting book and that I would read it in one sitting, but in reality, it turned out to be the same as with this series, or even worse - at least with the series, I didn't know how it would end, but here it's clear that it's about Napoleon, the Decembrists, and all that.

And for me, the setting plays an important role; I like to explore the world and gain new ideas. I also like it when the plot is based on the realities of the setting, on the unique ideas of the world. At one time, in a thread about beauty, I posted links to similar quasi-documentary things - there is a purely symbolic plot, but 95% is devoted to describing the setting, showing unusual biospheres and unusual creatures, and I found it very interesting.
