- So where has that fool Gert been hiding? – Dressed-up Ulrika burst into her husband's workshop with loud cries, hoping to find her son there. Usually at this time she didn't disturb Hans so he could work on weapons in a peaceful atmosphere, but this time she couldn't care less about his work. As a result: her once-focused husband dropped an antique hand cannon he had recently acquired for his collection, causing its barrel to become slightly bent.
-Well, you've given me a headache. – Hans remained calm. – What happened?
-What do you mean, what? That scatterbrained creature has a matchmaking meeting right now. And he's not here! And why are you still stuck in your workshop? And what's with your appearance? Did you FORGET that the Starks are coming to visit us today? – The still-beautiful-for-her-age Ulrika looked extremely displeased.
-Of course not, my love! – Hans tactfully kissed his wife on the forehead. – I was just about to finish up. And here you are, all in a fluster, I didn't even have time to understand anything.
In truth, Hans had conveniently forgotten that his wife had recently shared with the whole family her intentions to marry off their eldest son to some acquaintance's daughter. But admitting to such a sin was too dangerous for his psychological well-being. Gert had probably, like him, forgotten about the scheduled meeting and had gone off at best for a walk, at worst to get drunk with friends. Mentally, the father did not envy his son's upcoming fate if he didn't return soon.
Gert spent the whole day hiding in the forest within Tasidon, hoping to bag some big game. However, time passed, and luck was not on his side. The young man managed to doze off a bit, eat his snacks he'd brought from home, observe some small harmless creatures, but he never succeeded in his endeavor. He was frankly baffled as to why he was failing, since joint hunting trips with his father were usually successful. Perhaps the reason for his failure was that he ended up in the forest far from early morning, as he should have, but closer to noon, because he didn't want to miss a wonderful family breakfast. He also just chose the first spot that came along, without thinking about who usually lived there. He didn't show much attentiveness either; he wasn't interested in straining his eyes and ears to hear or see someone at a distance—that was usually his father's job. It wasn't that the young man was completely inconspicuous, not to mention the noise he made when snoring, eating, and kicking a tree out of boredom. Unfortunately, Gert was far from possessing Hans's wisdom and cleverness, so understanding his own mistakes was currently beyond him.
By late evening, the young man began to lose patience. He started thinking about returning home. However, an unexpected growl drove that thought from his mind. Gert didn't react to what was happening immediately, a fact a wolf that had set its sights on him was not too lazy to take advantage of.
The predator attempted to sink its teeth into its victim's back, but Gert's leather jacket, which received only minor scratches, and his innate agility saved him from certain death. Having dodged the sudden wolf attack, the young man was not ready to engage in a fight, so he preferred to try and flee. The realization that this attempt would not succeed came quickly enough. The wolf was not alone. And while Gert tried to escape, he discovered at least four predators. There was no choice; he had to give these monsters a fight.
The young man pressed his back against a tree, firmly gripped his personal arquebus, quickly aimed, and fired his first shot. The attack was successful; the predator, not expecting such resistance, fell dead. But this did not mean the end. The sight only made the remaining wolves more aggressive. This was no longer a game with a helpless victim. One of the wolves quickened its pace and lunged towards Gert. The youth, meanwhile, didn't lose his composure. Right after the first shot, he deftly and quickly reloaded his weapon and fired another shot, aimed at the wolf that had lunged.
And again, the small victory went to the Yarlian. The remaining wolves, stunned by what had happened, cooled their ardor and chose not to repeat the fate of their two predecessors, preferring to retreat in the hope of finding a more harmless victim.
Gert slowly made his way home with his two trophies.
-Where have you been?! And good lord, what happened to you? – Ulrika's rapidly growing anger suddenly subsided when she saw her own son covered in blood. Though she didn't yet know it wasn't his blood, and the only thing that could really be called damaged was his jacket.
-Well, it's like this... You asked Father for materials to realize your dream of opening a fur goods store, didn't you? And here I am, with two soft and smooth pelts!
The smug smile on her eldest son's face only irritated Ulrika more. Yes, she had long dreamed of sewing and selling expensive fur coats and luxurious hats made from natural wool. But the talk was about her husband purchasing batches of ready-made, high-quality fur, not about her family members running around from time to time catching random forest animals. She was about to start criticizing her son, but the admiring Marcus, Gert's younger brother, joined the conversation just in time.
-Wow! Did you do this yourself?
-You bet! Spent the whole day waiting for those two bastards! I wanted to shoot a couple more, but they were too cowardly to get close to me.
-And you weren't scared at all? – Marcus listened to his brother's words with admiration. He began to fantasize about how Gert bravely attacked the predators and deftly, without worrying about stance or aim, defeated his opponents.
Gert, for his part, omitted the details about how he almost shit his pants from fear and was sure until the very end that he would be devoured. Even when leaving the forest, he kept looking back, afraid that the remaining wolves would decide to catch up with him and avenge their fallen comrades.
While the eldest son boasted of his exploits to his admiring younger brother and indignant mother, Hans listened carefully and presumably figured out where his words contained lies and where there was a grain of truth. The father understood perfectly well that Gert's victory was the result of luck and good combat training received from a young age. If he had lacked even one of these, the young man would have been defeated.
-Well done, son! Now you'll have something to brag about to your friends! What a hunter you're growing up to be. – Hans decided to support his son's lie and not reveal his assumptions about how the young man had nearly given up the ghost in his adventure.
-And you're praising this fool too? He had an important matchmaking meeting, and instead he was risking his life in some wilderness to bring back two dirty, useless carcasses! – Ulrika's anger knew no bounds. She was upset by how she had been shamed, and at the same time her imagination conjured scenes in which Gert was defeated and torn apart by enraged forest predators.
Then it dawned on Gert that he had acted extremely rashly all day. Not only had he suffered all day doing nothing only to risk being eaten by a pack of wolves, but he had also completely forgotten about the scheduled meeting with a potential bride. However, he didn't feel much regret, as the issue of an arranged marriage didn't interest him at all.
-Oh, the matchmaking... I completely... Oh, well, I mean, it was all for my future bride! I wanted to catch some fluffy animal for her and, with your help, Mother, make her a warm and cozy gift. So, where is this wonderful young lady who dreams of marrying me?
-She went home long ago, – Ulrika hissed through her teeth, – as did her parents. Because of you, I don't know how I'll ever look Ingrid in the eye again. – The woman began to cry.
-There, there, dear, don't be upset. I'm sure everything will work out. You've been friends with her for a long time, and such a trifle is unlikely to cause a rift between you. – Hans gently hugged his fretful wife to calm her down a bit.
-Oh, you should have seen what you missed! – Mark decided to contribute to the situation. – First I went out to look at her, hoping she'd be a crocodile so I could tease you about it later. But no, you traded one gorgeous girl for this – the young man pointed at the wolf carcasses, though in truth he himself thought his older brother's adventure was much more exciting than a boring social evening.
Gert just shrugged. Pretty girl or not, he still wasn't in a hurry to walk down the aisle.
-Damn, your hands aren't just from your ass, they're sticking straight out of yo...
-Gert! – Hans intervened. – Be more tolerant of your brother. Remember, you once started repairing weapons yourself.
-I don't remember ever thinking the hammer and trigger were the same thing. Or mixing up parts like that...
-Still, you're too hot-tempered. Not everyone is gifted at handling weapons so deftly. But his sales are higher than yours.
-Yeah, you're too tedious when you start explaining all the details to customers. – Marcus tried to rehabilitate himself after the failure.
-Shut up! You just pawn off not-the-most-popular goods to inexperienced customers, while those who know what's what manage just fine without your help. Gert at least genuinely tries to help buyers, and with your high sales, it's not even certain we won't lose our reputation!
-In short, sit and study the theory. Until you've memorized every single part and how to handle all of them, you're not setting foot in the workshop! – At moments like this, Gert was very serious and strict with his brother. He loved Marcus and didn't want the Kaiser family business to suffer because of his carelessness.
The Kaiser weapon shops have served the population of the Yarlian Republic for generations. In addition to many small weapon outlets, the main store is located in Tasidon, which, besides the usual assortment, houses the Kaiser workshop. For this family, the gunsmithing craft is not just a profitable business, but also one of their favorite hobbies, bringing genuine pleasure.
-Marcus, even though we've scolded you along with your brother, we still appreciate your efforts. You're just very young and inexperienced. Over the years, you'll do everything perfectly. Now go, get some rest, and then calmly study the theory on your own. You can look through my books, see what's there. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask us.
-Okay, Dad. – Marcus bowed obediently and went to do everything his father had recommended.
Gert stayed in the workshop and began restoring the damaged tanegashima. Although he had never used Shinkansen weapons himself and would probably never want to shoot a foreign rifle, he was still interested in repairing it and studying the subtle differences from the familiar arquebus.
While his son worked on repairs, Hans decided to have a private word with him and propose a certain matter.
Ulrika's dazzling smile, with which she appeared before her beloved in the evening, greatly surprised Hans.
-Why are you so suspiciously cheerful?
-Today I met and talked with Ingrid. I told her about our eldest son's adventure and how hard he tried to please his bride with a gift that he lost track of time. She was so delighted that her resentment vanished as if by hand!
-So, you made up? Wonderful! – Hans gently hugged his wife. – So tonight we'll finally get some sleep, and I won't have to listen before bed about what a slacker Gert is, who he takes after, and whose fault it all is.
Ulrika was a bit indignant at her husband's last remarks but chose not to spoil her mood and not blow it into a conflict.
-That's not all! After that, Ingrid invited me to her home for a cup of tea. There we met Sigy, and she listened to the story of our son's exploits.
Hans already knew where his wife was heading. It was obvious that, despite the disappointment, upon hearing a convincing story full of exaggerations and conjectures, the girl had melted and forgiven her potential fiancé. Which meant the loving and caring mothers were again preparing for another attempt to organize a matchmaking.
Hans's guesses were, by and large, correct. The girl was genuinely delighted by what she heard. Moreover, among other things, if the matchmaking were successful, Ulrika had promised to sew the potential bride a hat and a fur coat from the fur obtained by her beloved son's efforts as a gift.
-This is all wonderful, of course, but your excellent matchmaking will have to be postponed.
-What, what do you mean? – Ulrika was clearly baffled by what was happening.
-You see, it's like this... In short, Gert is not in the city right now.
-WHAT???
Not waiting for the beautiful Ulrika to turn into an enraged dragon, Hans began calmly explaining to her that the family business currently required expansion and development. Therefore, in addition to the competitor-filled Yarlian Republic, it was time to establish a presence in other countries. And it was for this reconnaissance that the loving father decided to send Gert, since he himself could not step away from his duties, yet he trusted him as much as himself.
Stunned by this news, Ulrika begged her husband to admit he was just joking. But Hans wasn't joking. And at the moment, on his father's advice, Gert was heading to Deitia to join the company "Iron Hearts," where he could harden his character, explore potential locations for expanding the family business, and also earn money for living expenses. Among other things, the loving and caring father promised to send his son a small monthly sum from the family business to support him on this adventure.
