Berimir lived in the north of Boria, where the climate was even harsher, the sky darker, and the winter colder. He served on the border with the Lorey Republic, with which relations had been relatively good recently, despite past conflicts. Now, however, the Loreyans were preoccupied with another problem, as were the Borians themselves, who were warring among one another. The warrior was married to Veslava, who grew up and lived in a neighboring country but moved to him after meeting her future husband. However, she herself had partial Borian roots, so she could easily pass for a local. The couple may not have lived in the most comfortable conditions, nor did they possess great wealth, but they still lived well, perhaps even happily, as there was always harmony and love between them. After some time, a son was born to them, whom they named Goran. A few years later, when the child was about four years old, war came to their lands once again. The attack was swift, and the city's defenders did not have enough time to fully prepare for the defense. Many civilians perished in the first clash; Veslava was wounded among them. People began to evacuate children, women, and the elderly in haste, although some wished to stay and defend their home. Berimir decided to stay, while he gave little Goran to his wife's cousin, who was visiting them at the time. He asked her to take the boy to relatives in the Lorey Republic, and Mironega agreed. The Borian wanted to send his wife with the refugees as well, but in her condition, this was impossible. All he could do was hope that they would be able to hold their home and that the local healer would successfully treat his wounded spouse. A few more days passed before the city fell. When the defenses were broken, some warriors began to gradually retreat, while others fled entirely in fear. Berimir went to the hospital to see his wife, where he died protecting his beloved. Mironega delivered Goran safely to his relatives. She spent some time with the child to ensure everything was alright, after which she left him and her kin, as she lived in another city—not to mention that she often had to travel and work took up almost all of her time. Thus, the young Borian found himself in a new family who welcomed him warmly. Goran's life generally went well, although he occasionally caused problems for his relatives. The youth was never distinguished by intellect or strength, nor by other positive qualities. He barely remembered his Homeland, but he was told that it was very similar to the republic, except that it lagged behind in quality of life. And this despite the fact that the latter is periodically attacked not by ordinary people, but by vampires, who are far more formidable opponents. However, Loreyans are famous for their ability to resist the vile spawn, though doing so without good weapons is quite difficult. Weaponry was one of the few things in which Borians were superior. Goran had heard that his compatriots were known for their ingenuity and ability to create something new and effective, whether it be some kind of armament or another device. He took pride in this and dreamed that someday he could create something useful himself and bring fame not only to his own name but also to Boria.
As Goran grew older, it became harder for him to find common ground with his relatives, so at the age of 25, he left home and set out to wander the world, trying to find something that could give meaning to his life or at least a calling. The older he became, the less good remained in him. Although he was certainly not a scoundrel, he rather became more cynical, seeking profit everywhere and not striving to do good unless he was paid in gold. Thus, he most often worked as a guard or in a similar role, although dirty jobs involving cheating, selling stolen goods, and other such things occasionally turned up. But somewhere deep in the Borian's soul remained a desire to fulfill that old dream, which Goran sincerely considered naive. Years later, he partially succeeded when he created a unique crossbow capable of firing several shots at once. The newly minted inventor loved his creation very much and boasted about having assembled it himself whenever possible. After some more time, the day came when Goran wanted to see his loved ones, and he returned home. Only there, no one was waiting for him anymore. He could not find out if they were alive or, if so, where they were now. Perhaps his adoptive parents were already dead, as much time had passed, but they also had biological children. The Borian did not wish to search for them; they were not such close people, despite living together. By a twist of fate, it happened that on these very days, one of the border settlements was attacked by the spawn of darkness. That was where Aunt Mironega lived, whom Goran had seen after their joint journey from Boria. She had visited him more than once over all those years while he lived with his adoptive family. Learning of the attack, the Borian assumed the worst and hastily set off to see his relative. Arriving on site, he discovered his aunt's ruined house. But the sadness quickly passed when a small, stooped old woman appeared before him, rummaging through the ruins of the house trying to find surviving property. She was muttering something under her breath and cursing the vile creatures that had destroyed her home. Overjoyed, Goran swept up and hugged his second cousin once removed, for which he received a couple of blows with a cane to the head, as the old woman did not immediately recognize the man as her nephew. Left without a home, Mironega set off southeast with Goran. The Borian himself suggested the joint journey, something he later regretted more than once, although he loved his relative. The thing was that they were similar in temperament in some ways, but their views on life differed radically in many respects. On this basis, disputes often arose between them. The aunt became like a mother who is dissatisfied with her adult son and tries to correct him, correcting and criticizing almost everything. Mironega was a strong woman, willful, which could not be said of Goran. Perhaps this partially influenced why they continued to travel together, although the Borian understood that such a lifestyle did not suit the old woman. But all attempts to settle her somewhere proved unsuccessful. Once in one of the cities of Deisia, the Borian met an old friend from the north whom he had known about ten years ago. The latter suggested he join their group, which was based in the Celian Kingdom and performed various assignments for monetary reward. This option seemed quite good to Goran, partly because they would now have a place to return to, like a home, after each journey.
