Regarding Torold, I don't know.

The Swamp hero should appear like that, and there are one-way portals where he appears. The point is that you need to take Virill faster; then, you'll have more troops when the Swamp hero arrives.

You either have to replay from the first few weeks or start over completely.

Just in case, I'll add this: did you use the "Start Over" ("Replay Scenario") button in the game? Never do that: this is exactly when a well-known bug in the game manifests, where all tents are suddenly considered visited from the start for the AI opponents!
