Diplomacy only increases the chance of joining by 10%. Without a significant numerical advantage, it won't force foreign factions to join. And with it, they often join even without diplomacy.

Markel is not a hero; I can't even call him a decent cheat... it's all just lazy work, his ability is far too fantastical.
My favorites are Kaspar, Vlad, and Lucretia.

I haven't played with Marcol. I don't think he's that great. It's just that when I control Kaspar, he wins all battles WITHOUT any losses. Well, almost without losses. To replenish the army, you just need to find living creatures... and that's it.
But let me clarify right away that when facing a formidable opponent, it won't be possible to win without any losses, but his ability to use the tent for well-planned mass resurrection is something that my younger brother foolishly considers cheating. And what's more, with the right approach, even a very difficult battle for other factions can end with zero losses, and that's a fact.
