Bets are placed on a single participant, and the winnings depend on the total amount of bets placed (i.e., the more bets, the smaller the winnings in case of victory, and vice versa). Participants in the pool typically bet more on good horses.
By the way, Ment, you still haven't answered whether I should sell my extra items (staff of fire, wand of Theria, tome of air magic – although I probably shouldn't sell that one, and I wouldn't get much for it anyway) and the earrings made of Drearian silver, which I actually also want to keep AS A SOUVENIR).
You can sell the Staff of Fire, but it's not necessary. Definitely don't sell the Wand of Trii until you've learned the mana regeneration skill. You can't sell the Tome of Air Magic in this town, as there's no bookstore here. It's better to sell the Earrings. The Amulet of Memory isn't great, but they should give you at least a little silver for it.
For now (and perhaps indefinitely), education at the academy was only offered to girls, but if Bedivere was still interested in learning the details (in case he wanted to enroll his daughter), he had the option to get more detailed information from the academy's director – a woman named Yondji, who, coincidentally, was also the unofficial head of this district.
